6th Grade : Event Presentations

6th grade students had two English classes this week. They used those classes to finish creating their original events and started presenting on them to the class. The students who didn't manage to present this week will do their presentations next week.

At the start of the class the teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration of the greeting game.
"What's your favorite subject?"
"Guess what?"
"Hint, please."
IMG_1456.jpg *gesture hint*
"Oh! Science?"
"Yes! I like science!"

The students focused on remembered what the other person said as well as linking their questions to make a natural conversation.
IMG_1472.jpg "Do you like soccer?"
"Yes, I do!"
"Oh! What's your favorite soccer team?"

edited.jpg"Do you like grapefuits?"
"No, I don`t. I like apples. Do you like apples?"
"Yes, I do!"

IMG_1470.jpg "Do you like music?"
"Yes, I do."
"Can you play the recorder?"
"Yes, I can."

Next, we did the chant and then checked the goal for the class.
IMG_1473.jpg

After that, Mayumi-Sensei did a demonstration of how to give a good presentation including making eye contact.
IMG_1462.jpg The students have not memorized their presentations but Mayumi-Sensei recommended that they acted like news presenters by reading and looking up to make eye contact from time to time.

In order for the students not presenting to have a reason to listen carefully we gave everyone a worksheet to fill out.
IMG_1171.jpg Also during the presentations they had to react to what the presenter was saying.

The students who did their presentations this week were very nervous but they tried their best!
IMG_1401.jpg"Hello! My name is ~."

IMG_1466.jpg "I like ice cream so I produce the `Ice cream Festival."

IMG_1486.jpg "I produce the `Light up Festival. It's on December 21st."
The class always asked about the date, "Why?".
The students could answer in Japanese. "It's the shortest day of the year so it's the best day for a festival with lights."

After talking about the date the students talked about the activities in their event in Japanese.
IMG_1407.jpg "In the Yakiniku Festival you can eat many different kinds of meat."

IMG_1485.jpg "In the Music Festival there will be a special song release."

IMG_1404.jpg "In the Dog Festival you can meet many different breeds of dogs."

The students finished by asking the other students to visit their event.
IMG_1477.jpg " Please come to the Baseball Festival!"

Good job everyone. We are looking forward to seeing the rest of the presentations next week!

5th Grade : Let's design t-shirts!

5th grade students had their third class studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. In this class they designed t-shirts for their friends after asking about the shapes and colors that they like.

We started class with our usual greeting game.
IMG_1416.jpg The homeroom teacher and one student gave a demonstration of what to do.

Next everyone used the English they knew to ask questions. We told them students that we would ask them who they talked to and what they said after the game so they did their best to remember what everyone said.
IMG_1444.jpg "Hello!"

"What's your favorite subject?"
"Guess what?"
IMG_1426.jpg "Hmmm...let me think..."

"What fruits do you like?"
IMG_1418.jpg "I like strawberries."

"What sports do you like?"
IMG_1423.jpg "I like basketball!"
"Me, too!"

After the greeting game we did the chants and then confirmed the goal for the class.
edited.jpg Everyone was excited to design their t-shirts.

After watching a demonstration by the teachers it was time for everyone else to try.
IMG_1428.jpg The most important thing that everyone kept in mind from the teachers demonstration was to keep eye contact.

"What shapes do you like?"
"I like hearts and stars."
IMG_1453.jpg Great eye contact!

After both people had finished talking about what shapes and colors they like then the students could take notes.
IMG_1434.jpg The students tried not to used any Japanese.

They used their crayons to note the colors.
IMG_1413.jpg They drew pictures to note the shapes.

Next, it was time to design the t-shirts. Everyone tried hard to make a t-shirt that their partner would like.
IMG_1438.jpg Nice colors!

IMG_1437.jpg Great design!

In the next class then all the of students will present their designs. We had some students who had finished early to present their design at the end of this class.
IMG_1441.jpg Everyone asked together "What colors do you like?", "What shapes do you like?" and they checked the t-shirt to see that it matched the persons tastes. Lastly the designer said a few sentences in Japanese about what they thought about when designing the t-shirt.

Good job everyone! We are looking forward to seeing all your designs in the next class!

Tomilish Time : Mixed Grades Again!

In this week's Tomilish Time the 6th graders went to the 1st graders classrooms to help them with greetings and the `Hello Song`.

First, the 6th graders did a demonstration.
IMG_0916.jpg "How are you?"
"I'm good!"

Next, everyone did the greeting game together.
edited2.jpg "Hello!"

edited.jpg Nice smiles!

After that the 6th graders demonstrated the `Hello Song`.
DSC_4444.jpg Everyone watched carefully.

Then they sang and did the gestures together.
DSC_4445.jpg Good job 1st and 6th grade students!

The other graders are used to Tomilish Time so they did everything a little different. This time 5th and 2nd students mixed, and 3rd and 4th students mixed together.
We started with demonstrations. There are three different kinds of demonstrations:
IMG_0906.jpg Teacher - Teacher demonstration

IMG_0902.jpg Student - Teacher demonstration

IMG_0904.jpg Student - Student demonstration
Doing many different kinds of demonstration allows everyone to understand what to do without the teachers giving directions in Japanese. It also gives all the students confidence.

"Hello!"
IMG_0910.jpg"How are you?"

The students used the English they have studied so far to ask many questions.
DSC_4453.jpg "What's your favorite kyushoku?"

"Do you like pink?"
DSC_4452.jpg "No, I don't."

"How are you?"
DSC_4438.jpg "I'm happy!"

Good job everyone! You did your best!

Upper Grades Tomilish Time : Chants, Listening and Folder Making

This week both 5th and 6th grade students did activities to suppliment their studies in their English classes during Upper Grades Tomilish Time.

5th grade students have been studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. They did both the chant and the `Let's watch and think` activity in Let's Try!1 Unit 5.
IMG_0877.jpg In the video the characters asked each other about the things they like.

Everyone watched the video and listened carefully.
edited.jpgAs students do not have copies of the 'Let's Try!1' textbook we used the digital version of the textbook and answered the questions together as a class.

6th grade students continued studying We Can!1 Unit 2 "When is your birthday?". First they did the chant.
edited.jpg "September 9th!"

It's a difficult chant that the students have found hard in class so we have also been practicing it as much as possible in Tomilish Time.
edited2.jpg Everyone did their best to say the parts of the chant that they could!

Next, they did the activities `Let's Listen 2` and `Let's Listen 3`.
IMG_0875.jpg Everyone had to listen carefully.

IMG_1397.jpg They drew a line from the character to their birthday.

Both 5th and 6th grade students finished Upper Grades Tomilish Time by sticking a ziplock bag into their English file.
IMG_1400.jpg They will use it to hold their name tag as well as some small cards that we use in class.

The completed files look like this:
IMG_1399.jpg Good job everyone!

5th Grade : Let's play Collect 5!

5th grade students had their second class studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. In this class they continued studying about shapes.

After greetings, we started class with a demonstration of our greeting game. We noticed that many 5th grade students have been answering the questions "What ~ do you like?" with the phrase "It's ~." so we used a demonstration with the homeroom teacher using the correct phrase, "I like ~.", to emphasis this.
IMG_1347.jpg "Mr. Kaiwa, what sports do you like?"
"I like basketball!"

Before the greeting game the teachers make sure to tell the students that they must speak to a certain number of boys and girls. Everyone did their best to speak to many different people.
IMG_1331.jpg "What food do you like?"

IMG_1359.jpg "What color do you like?"

After the greeting game the teachers picked some students and asked them who they talked to as well as what they said. If the students know they will be asked about who they talked to they try hard to remember what their friends say.
IMG_1363.jpg "She said she likes sky blue."

Next, Ms. Emily reviewed the pronunciation for shapes in English.
IMG_1351.jpg The word `rectangle` is the most difficult for everyone.

Then, we did the chant. We used the karaoke version and practiced splitting the chant in two so one group asked the question "What shape do you like?" and the other group answered.
IMG_1338.jpg Here the teachers are listening to the students ask "What shape do you like?"

After practicing as a class the students also did the chant in pairs.
IMG_1343.jpg The students could answer with their favorite shapes.

Finally we played the `Collect 5` game. Students tried to collect 5 cards with the same shape by playing janken with their friends. The winner could talk about the shape they liked and receive that shape's card.
IMG_1371.jpg "What shape do you like?"

We stopped the activity half-way through and got some students to give a good demonstration.
IMG_1346.jpg "When he didn't have the card she wanted he said `Sorry!`. That's great!"

Next, everyone kept the good points of the demonstration in mind while they continued with the activity.
IMG_1367.jpg Everyone had a lot of fun!
Good job 5th grade students!

6th Grade : Let's create an original event!

Recently 6th grade students studied their third lesson on We Can! 1 Unit 2 "When is your birthday?". Since they studied this grammar point last year too we decided to focus on something other than birthdays in order to make it more interesting. In this class the students created their own event.

First, after our usual greetings, two of the students volunteered to give a demonstration of the greeting game.
IMG_1300.jpg "Can you play the piano?"
"Yes, I can."

Next, everyone else tried to use all the English they have studied so far in order to have conversations with their friends.
IMG_1312.jpg Nice smile!

edited.jpg Good eye contact and gestures.

Then, we did the chant from We Can!1. It's a difficult and fast chant. The students tried to do gestures, too. You can see the concentration in their faces!
IMG_1315.jpg "July 7th, August 8th, September 9th..."

After that, Ms. Emily talked about strange festivals and events around the world. It was very interesting to learn about them.
IMG_1319.jpg In Thailand they have a buffet for monkeys. It is held in November.

Next, the homeroom teacher confirmed with everyone about the goal for the class.
IMG_1324.jpg "Let's make our own original event that everyone will enjoy."

Ms. Mayumi showed a demonstration.
IMG_1327.jpg It's important for the students to see a demonstration so they know what to aim for.

The students had to think about some events and activities. It was important that people would want to take part in the festival.
IMG_1191.jpg She had thought hard about the date, too. The date of her event a play on the word natto.

Ms. Emily wrote the months of the year on the board.
IMG_1192.jpg She also wrote any words that the students wanted to use in their event name. This meant that the students just had to copy the words in English.

Everyone worked hard to create their events.
IMG_1190.jpg

They thought about what would be interest and what kind of event they would like, too.
IMG_1328.jpg After they have finished preparing their events they will all give presentations. We are looking forward to hearing about all the different ideas that people had.

Tomilish Time: Let's cheer at Sports Day!

In the Tomilish Time before Sports Day we had a TV broadcast so that we could practice how to cheer in English. Some of the 6th grade students also came to help interview some of the new teachers.

As always we started with our greetings.
"Look at the sky. How is the weather today?"
screenshot6.jpg "It's cloudy!"

"What day is it today?"
"It's Wednesday."
"What is the date today?"
screenshot7.jpg "It's May 23rd."
"I see!"

Next, Ms. Emily talked about dancing in Aoba Festival.
screenshot5.jpg She will dance in Kizuna Festival at the start of June. Ms. Keiko used some English phrases to cheer for Ms. Emily.

Everyone practiced saying the phrases together.
screenshot9.jpg "You can do it!" "Do your best!" "Don't give up!"

We played the `Hello Song` and asked the students who will represent their class in the relay race to come to the front of the class so everyone could cheer for them.
screenshot3.jpg "Hello! Hello! Hello, how are you?"
Ms. Emily and Ms. Keiko like dancing to the `Hello Song`.

After that, everyone cheered together for the relay participants
screenshot4.jpg "You can do it!"

Next, some of the 6th grade students helped to interview some of the new teachers. First, they interviewed Ms. Hiratsuka the school dietician.
screenshot8.jpg "What's your favorite kyushoku?"
"I like touji kabocha."
"Why?"
"I can get energy."

Next, it was the turn of the school nurse, Ms. Koseki.
screenshot2.jpg "What's your favorite fruit?"
"I like strawberries."
"Why?"
"They are sour."

We learned a lot about the new teachers. It was interesting!
screenshot1.jpg Thanks to the 6th grade students for being great interviewers! Good job!

5th Grade : What shape do you like?

This week 5th grade students have started to studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. They used this first class to interview their classmates about their favorite shape in order to add it to their class flags for sports day.

After our usual greetings we did a greeting game.
IMG_1121.jpg The homeroom teacher and one of the students did a demonstration for everyone to see. 5th grade students are focusing on using the English they know as well as talking to many different people.

After watching the demonstration it was time to greet.
IMG_1155.jpg Good eye contact!

IMG_1186.jpg Nice smiles!

Next, we did the chant. This time we are using the chant from Let's Try!1 Unit 5 `What do you like?`.
edited.jpg We listen at first and then tried to do the chant using gestures.

After the chant we listened to the teachers talking. They asked each other the question "What shape do you like?".
IMG_1165.jpg "I like hearts. Look! I have a heart stamp!"
The students guessed that today's topic was `shapes`.

Next, we practiced the pronunciation of shapes in English with Ms. Emily.
IMG_1166.jpg Words that have similar Japanese pronunciations such as `diamond` were a little difficult.

Then, we practiced asking the teachers "What shape do you like?". This allows the students to practice asking the question because they can ask the question with many people. After asking the teachers, we then asked some of the students.
"What shape do you like?"
IMG_1171.jpg"I like crosses."

After practicing as a class we then practiced more in groups by playing a memory game. Everyone in the group would ask one person "What shape do you like?". They had to answer with the shape they like as well as remember what the previous people had said.
IMG_1173.jpg Asking questions with other people is a great confidence builder!

Next, we revealed the main goal for the class.
IMG_1125.jpg "We want to add some shapes to your class flags for sports day. Let's interview your classmates to find the most popular shape for this class."

Before starting the interview the teachers showed the students a demonstration.
IMG_1133.jpgMs. Emily also taught everyone how to tally numbers in Scotland.

"Let's interview!"
IMG_1128.jpg "What shape do you like?"
"I like stars."

Everyone worked very hard to wait until after both they and their partner had finished speaking in order to write down their results. That way they could make good eye contact.
IMG_1145.jpg Good job!

IMG_1182.jpg Nice smile!

Lastly, everyone tallied up their results.
IMG_1136.jpg The teachers asked everyone to raise their hands to find out the number one shape.

"What was your number one shape?"
"Stars?"
IMG_1138.jpg "Wow! Almost everyone found that stars was the most popular shape!"

We are all looking forward to seeing the finished flags at sports day!

6th Grade : Birthday Bingo!

Today 6th grade students studied their second lesson on We Can! 1 Unit 2 "When is your birthday?". We focused on listening activities to build their confidence in understanding dates.

The greetings at the start of the class are led by the class leaders for that day.
IMG_1105.jpg "Good morning everyone!"

Next, Ms. Emily and one of the students did a demonstration for the greeting game. Recently they have been using the phrase "What is your favorite~?" a lot so we decided to show a demonstration using many other phrases.
IMG_1106.jpg "Ms. Emily, can you speak Spanish?"
"Yes, I can! Hola!"

"Can you play the recorder?"
IMG_1111.jpg "Yes, I can."

"When is your birthday?"
IMG_1115.jpg "My birthday is March 14th."

"Do you like natto?"
IMG_1100.jpg "No, I don't."

"Can you speak Japanese?"
IMG_1113.jpg "Yes, I can!"

Next, we did the chant for that unit with gestures. After that we did `Let's Listen 1` and `Let's Watch and Think 2`.
IMG_1104.jpg The students had to listen to the festival descriptions (Let's Listen 1) or watch the video (Let's Watch and Think 2) in order to draw a line from the festival picture to the correct month.

"We hold snowball fights in February."
IMG_1103.jpg "Let's draw a line to February."

After the listening activities we played bingo with ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.).
IMG_1088.jpg Ms. Emily said the numbers and the homeroom teacher didn't write the number on the board until Ms. Emily was saying the next number. That gave everyone time to think while still making them listen to the numbers that Ms. Emily said.

IMG_1117.jpg Everyone listened carefully!

After Ms. Emily said the numbers everyone repeated them.
IMG_1086.jpg "First!"

The students tried to get `Bingo!` and everyone enjoyed it so much that we kept playing until someone got a full house (all numbers erased). The students called this `Perfect Bingo`.
IMG_1094.jpg "Perfect!!"

Good job 6th grade students. It was a fun class!

3rd Grade : Rainbows from around the world!

3rd grade students have started to study Let's try!1 Unit 4 `I like blue`. Last year they studied the question "Do you like~?" while learning about colors and vegetables etc. This year we will study sports and types of food, too.

After our usual greetings we listened to the teachers talking and tried to understand what they said.
DSC_4384.jpg "I like pink. Do you like pink?"
"No, I don't."

"Do you know what the teachers were talking about? What words did you catch?"
DSC_4376.jpg "I know! I know! They talked about what they like."

Next, in order to introduce some new vocabulary the teachers gave a 3 hint quiz. The students could answer the quiz in Japanese.
"Hint 1. Ball"
"Hint 2. Outside"
DSC_4373.jpg "Hint 3. 11 people vs. 11 people"
"Soccer!"

"Hint 1. Summer"
"Hint 2. Pool"
DSC_4389.jpg "Hint 3. Crawl"
"Swimming!"

After each new word was introduced through the quiz we praticed the English pronunciation with Ms. Emily.
DSC_4407.jpg "Swimming! Swimming!"

Next, we did the chant. First we listened twice. Then we chanted the words that we knew while doing gestures. We slowly built up until the students could try to say the whole chant.
DSC_4394.jpg "Red. Red. I like red. Wow! Beautiful!"

After the chant, the students did `Activity 1`. They had to color the rainbow in the textbook as they liked. The teachers were careful to not give them any directions.
DSC_4412.jpg Everyone colored their rainbows in different ways.

Some students picked their favorite colors.
DSC_4396.jpg Other students tried to remember the order that we see colors in a rainbow.

After that we did `Let's Watch and Think1'.
DSC_4401.jpg We watched students from around the world color in rainbows.

The students compared the rainbows in the video to the rainbows that they drew. They announced to everyone what they thought.
DSC_4406.jpg "The student from Kenya used the colors of the Kenyan flag. He used black! It was very different from my rainbow."

Good job 3rd grade students!
