4th grade students had their fifth and last class on the topic is `This is my day.` using the `Good Morning` picture book. In previous classes the students learned how to talk about their daily routine and made picture story shows (kamishibai) in groups. In this class they performed those shows for the other students.

The groups took turns to perform for everyone.
The students had all drawn pictures about the same character.

Other members of the group held the picture while the student who drew it introduced it in English while doing gestures.
"I get up."

4th grade students have been focusing this year on improving their gestures so they all tried to do them while speaking.
Great gesture!!

The students introduced the daily routine of their character.
"I brush my teeth."

Some students showed great originality. In the storybook the character combs his hair, however Doraemon is a cat, so he is different.
"I comb my whiskers."

I wonder what they are eating.
"I have breakfast."

"I go to school."
The pictures and gestures made it easy for everyone to understand.

"I watch TV."
Souta-kun likes the same T.V. shows as the students!

"I dream a wonderful dream."
Nobita dreams about getting 100 on a test. Of course Doraemon dreams about dorayaki. Nice ideas!

It was very fun to see what the other students had created.

Recently 6th grade students had their fifth and last class on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 7 `We are good friends`. This was also their last English class in Elementary School. They have been making their own original Momotaro skits and they performed those skits in this class.

We started class with some of the students asking the greeting questions instead of Ms. Emily.
"How is the weather?"
"What day is it today?"
"What is the date today?"

After greetings it was time for the students to perform their skits. All the skits were based on the story of Momotaro however the students used their imaginations to make their own original version which made the skits very interesting.
The demons are kidnapping Suicajiro while Momotaro, Grandpa and Grandma are sleeping! Oh no!

"I am Demon King!!"

"Kibidango! Thank you! So delicious! I'm great!"

Grandpa is cutting open the peaches!

Both Grandpa and Grandma have bad backs. Take care!

Everyone is going to Onigashima in a Ferrari!!

The demons are apologising for being bad. Wait? Who is that in the background?

Grandma is making everyone sushi while they are in Onigashima!

Momotaro met Monkey, Dog and Bird already. Who is this? Oh! It's a cat!

Those monsters look so strong!

The monsters are having a great time breaking houses!

After each performance the students who watched gave their opinions on the good points of each skit.
"They used gestures really well. It was easy to understand the story!"

There were prizes for Best English, Best Story and Best Teamwork.
Since all of the students tried so hard, each of the 3 groups in each class got one prize.

Finally the students reflected on their two years of studying English at elementary school.
They thought about what they have learned and also how they want to use English in the future.

The teachers asked some of the students to announce what they wrote.
"I want to use the English I learned here when I go to junior high school."

Lastly, Ms. Emily gave each student a ticket to go to junior high school English class.
All the teachers talked about how hard the students had worked in English class.

"Good luck! You can do it!"

Good job everyone! You all showed interesting and funny skits. Please enjoy English in the future, too!

First grade students just had their tenth and last English class of this school year. In this class we reviewed all the English that we have studied so far with games and activities.

We started class with our usual greeting game. Today we practiced using the phrase "Do you like~?", too.
"Ms. Emily, how are you?"
"I'm happy!"

After watching the teachers' demonstration the students tried to greet many friends.
"Hello!"

"How are you?"

"Do you like snakes?"

"No, I don't!"

"See you!"

After the greeting game, everyone listened to the teachers' conversation and tried to pick out words that they understood.
"Do you know him?"
"Yes, I do! He is the Olympic Champion. He got a gold medal."

We used this as a chance to introduce three new colors : gold, silver and bronze.
Many students knew the words `gold` and `silver` but the word `bronze` was new to almost everyone. Even the words `gold` and `silver` were pronounced differently than in Japanese so the students were surprised.

After learning these new colors we asked the students what other colors they remembered learning in English this year.
While practicing the colors we also practiced numbers, too. "How many colors?"
"1, 2, 3, 4! 4 colors!"

After we had displayed all the colors we practiced counting them together.
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6..."

Then, we sang the `10 Steps Song`. After singing it once we replaced some of the numbers with actions. "Let's clap instead of singing number 3!"
"1, 2, ..., 4, 5, 6, 7!"

Next, we used the colors and numbers to play the irosagashi game. The teachers demonstrated at first.
"Touch two yellow things!"
"Okay! 1.....2!"

The students had to listen carefully to both the color and the number.
"Touch seven pink things!"
"Seven?! Let's look!"

After that we did the `3 Hint Animal Quiz`.
"1. Brown
2. Jump
3. Australia"
"Kangaroo?"
"Yes!"

Then we did another animal activity. We sang and danced to `Let's Go To The Zoo!` DVD by Super Simple Songs.
"Let's go to the zoo and slither like snakes do!"

Next, we played the `Please Game`. Everyone had to listen carefully to Ms. Emily and only do what she said when she used the word `please`.
"Touch your shoulders, please!"

"Touch your mouth, please!"
"Touch your nose!"
"She didn`t say please! Don't move!"

Our last activity in the class was to read the picture book `Spot Goes to the Farm`.
It's a book with a lot of animal sounds in it which was fun for the students.

"Neigh! Neigh! What animal is this?"
"Sheep?"
"Cow?"
"Horse?"
"Let's look. It's a horse!"

The students enjoyed guessing which animals were making the sounds.

Finally we ended class with the students reflecting on what they studied this year and what they want to study in 2nd grade next year.
"I learned a lot of words for colors this year."

Good job first grade students! Let's enjoy English next year, too!

3rd grade students had their sixth and last class on the topic is `Who are you?`. This was the students final English class for this school year. In the previous classes we read the picture book `In the Autumn Forest` and practiced performing a skit. In this class, it was time for everyone to perform the skits that they had been practicing hard.

We started class with our usual greeting game. The teachers demonstrated using the phrase `What is your favorite~?` that we had practiced during Tomilish Time.
"What's your favorite sweets?"
"Guess what?"
"Hint, please!"
"Two circles, sweet, brown and white."
"Donuts?"
"That's right!"

After the demonstration it was time for the students turn.
"What's your favorite color?"
"Guess what?"
"Hint, please!"
"Strawberries."
"Red?"
"That's right!"

Class 3-1 students performed their skits during the parents observation class (授業参観). Everyone was very nervous but they did their best!
"I see something long! Are you a...?"
"Oh, my body! Yes, I am. I am a snake!"

Classes 3-2 and 3-3 performed their skits in normal English class. Everyone tried to cheer on their classmates and watched the other skits carefully. The students had even prepared some drawings of body parts to use in the skits.
"I see something shiney. Are you a...?"

"Oh, my teeth!"
"Yes, I am! I am a horse!"

"I see something cute! Are you a...?"
"Oh, my paw!"

The students did their best to speak in clear voices.
"Oh, my ears! Yes, I am. I am a rabbit."

The students acting as dogs had many things to say but they worked well together.
Nice teamwork!

The students tried to add gestures and sounds to their performances.
"I am a turtle. Splash!"

"Thank you for watching!"
Everyone worked hard and did a great job.
Well done 3rd grade students! You were all amazing!

5th grade students had their fifth and last class on the topic `Who is your hero?`. In this topic they are studying how to introduce someone who they admire while using the phrase `He/She is good at ~`. This class was also their last English class for this school year.

We started class with a greeting game. This time we used the question "What is your favorite food?". The teachers demonstrated first.
"Hint, please!"
"Fish and rice."
"Sushi?"
"Yes, that's right!"

Next, it was the students turn. They always enjoy giving quizzes to their friends.
"What's your favorite food?"
"Guess what?"

"Hint, please!"
"Tomatoes and onions."

"Salad?"
"No! It's not."
"Hint, please!"

"Cheese. Circle."
"Pizza?"

"Yes, that's right!"
"Yeay! I guessed right!!"

After the greeting game we asked the students to tell us who had difficult or interesting quizzes. Those students gave their quizzes to everyone.
"Black and white. You put on food."
"Salt and pepper?"
"Yes! That's right!"

Next, we did the chant. The students tried hard to sing along and do the gestures.
"This is my hero. He is Kosei. He can run fast."

Students even tried to do the karaoke version without the teacher's help.
The chant is difficult and fast but they could do it by themselves! Good job!

After the chant, Ms. Keiko got one of the students to help to demonstrate the next activity. In the last class the students had introduced their heroes in pairs and in groups. In this class they walked around the classroom freely introducing their hero to many people.
"This is my hero. He is Roger Federer. He is good at playing tennis."
"That's great!"

The students did their best to introduce their heroes in English.
They tried to use the phrases `He/She can~.` and `He/She is good at~.` when they were talking.

It was very interesting to hear about everyones' heroes.

The teachers got some students to give a good demonstration.
She used the phrases we have studied very well. Good job!

Next, we played a boardgame that reviewed all the English the 5th graders studied this year.
It had questions about each other the topics that the students had studied.

The students enjoyed it very much!

It was a fun way to finish English class for the year.

It had many questions such as doing janken in English with their friends or asking English questions to their teachers.

The students did their best and were surprised about how much English they could speak. It gave them confidence that they have learned a lot this year!

Finally the students wrote a feedback card reflecting on English class this year.
Many students wrote that their feelings for English changed throughout the year and now they find it interesting to talk to their friends in English.

The teachers had some students announce what they wrote.
"We could ask our friends questions that we don't usually talk about in Japanese and learn many new things about them. It was a great chance to know our friends better."

At the end of the class the students received a ticket to move up to 6th Grade English.

Good job 5th grade students! You worked so hard in English class this year! Let's have fun and do our best in English class next year, too!

Recently we had our last Tomilish Time for the school year. We used this time to reflect on what we have learned this year. The students did a survey in class with their teachers and thought about what they are able to do now.

First and second graders had to color in the balloons if they felt they were able to do what it said.


Third to sixth graders had to write a circle in the box of things they were able to do.


The students listened as their teachers explained each part of the survey and completed it carefully.
"I can make eye contact. Let's color that balloon!"

It was interesting for the students to see how many things they have become able to do in English.
"I can ask `What's this?`. I can ask `What's your favorite~?`. I can do many things!"

The teachers also checked with the students.
"You circled that you can ask questions about what people like. Please ask me!"
"Do you like soccer?"
"Yes, I do! Great job!"

The students have all learned a lot this year. Good job everyone!

Everyone realised that they have learned many things. Let's have fun and learn more English next year too!

Today 6th grade students had their fourth class on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 7 `We are good friends`. They have been making their own original Momotaro skits. In the last class they received advice from their classmates about how to improve their skits. They used that advice to work on making their skits better in this class.

For our usual 3 questions during greeting time we had the students ask the questions instead of Ms. Emily.
"Look at the sky. How is the weather today?"

"What day is it today?"

"What is the date today?"

After two years of listening to the questions every English class it is good for the students to try to ask the questions themselves.

After the greetings, Ms. Keiko explained about the 3 prizes that we will give in the next class after watching the skits peformances.

It's possible that the same team could win all three prizes or three different teams could get the prizes.

The prizes gave students motivation to practice hard in the class.

3rd grade students had their fifth class on the topic `Who are you?`. In the previous classes we read the picture book `In the Autumn Forest` and decided characters and lines for performing a skit. In this class we practiced the movements and English needed to perform the skit.

First, students who were performing the same character got together in groups to practice their lines (セリフ) together. These students are performing the character `dog` who plays hide and seek with the other animals.
"5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Ready or not! Here I come!"

As well as practicing the English together they also discussed what gestures they should do.
"Let's cover our eyes when we are counting!"

Next, the students got together in their skit groups to practice together.
"First, let's check our lines!"

The students took turns to show their group their gestures and lines.
"Oh! My paw! Yes, I am a cat!"

After that, they rehearsed their full skit. Everyone practiced their gestures and lines. The dogs searched for many different animals.
"I see something..."

The other animals poked their body parts out from behind a screen.


In this class the students practiced using a doorway.


The dogs spotted the body parts and tried to guess what animal it was.
"I see something cute."

"Oh! It's me!"

"I see something scary!"

The students practiced really hard. In the next class everyone will perform their skits.
"Let's do our best in the next class! Gambaro!"

Everyone is looking forward to seeing the finished skits.

Today 5th grade students had their fourth class on the topic `Who is your hero?`. In this topic they are studying how to introduce someone who they admire while using the phrase `He/She is good at ~`.

We started class with our usual greetings and greeting game. The teachers did a demonstration. Today we used the question "What is your favorite anime character?". The students helped the teachers to guess the answers.

The students asked each other about their favorite anime character. It was a very interesting topic for the students.
"What is your favorite anime character?"

"Guess what?"
"Hint, please!"

"It's black. It's a mouse."
"It's Mickey?"
"That's right!!"

After the greeting game we did the chant. In the first class everyone thought it was very very fast and impossible. However, now it's the fourth class the students are singing along with the chant and doing gestures, too! Practice makes perfect!

Everyone tried to make funny and interesting gestures. It makes doing the chants more fun!

Next, the teachers demonstrated today's activity. Everyone will introduce their hero.
"This is my hero. He is Yuta Tabuse. He is short but he can jump high. He is good at playing basketball."

After watching the demonstration the students had a short time to prepare. If they had any questions about how to say anything in English then they asked the teachers. After preparing it was time to practice in pairs.
"Who is your hero?"

"This is my hero. She is a kindergarten teacher."

The students took turns to introduce their heros in pairs. The teachers helped too with any difficult English.

After practing the pairs the students got into groups and introduced their heros.
It was very interesting to learn about all the different heroes.

Everyone tried hard to listen when people were introducing their hero.


The teachers picked one group to give a good demonstration.
"Look! Everyone in this group is watching and listening carefully to the presentation. It makes the person who is presenting feel good. Let's all do that!"

Finally the students wrote about their reflections of the class.
"It was interesting to hear about my friend's hero. I felt happy that my friends listened to my presentation."

The teachers asked some of the students to tell everyone what they wrote.
"I noticed everyone had different heroes and I thought that was great."

4th grade students had their third and fourth classes on the topic is `This is my day.` using the `Good Morning` picture book. In the first two classes we listened to the story and focused on learning how to talk about our daily routine. In the next two classses we had mixed English and art classes as the students made picture story shows (kamishibai) in groups.

After our usual greetings, we reviewed the daily routine phrases that we had studied in the previous classes.
"I study English."

Next, the students decided in their groups what pictures they would draw.
Each group had 4 or 5 members so the students each had to draw at least two pictures.

Each group decided on a character.
Some of the characters were famous cartoon characters and others were original characters that the students created.

The students could draw pictures that appeared in the story.
Some students also created their own original pictures for their character's daily routine such as snowboarding or playing baseball.

The students worked hard on their pictures in groups.
"Look! Our character looks like you!"

The students really enjoyed creating their own characters and drawing the pictures together.

Some of the students shared the work, too.One student was in charge of drawing the picture and the other student was in charge of coloring and adding details.
