5th Grade : Completed Flags!

Earlier this year 5th grade students interviewed their classmates to find out the most popular shape in order to add it to their class flags for sports day. You can see that class here. We would like to show the results of that class.

In each of the three classes `stars` were the most popular shape. The theme for 5th grade at sports day was `Pirates of Tomizawa` so `crosses` were also popular.

Here are the completed flags:
IMG_2577.jpg Class 5-1 added a big star over their class number.

IMG_2576.jpg Class 5-2 added a star for each member of their class.

IMG_2530.jpg Class 5-3 added stars to the sail of their pirate ship.

Here are some pictures of the flags in action during sports day:
IMG_3925.jpg The flag holders led each class out on to the field.

IMG_3939.jpg The waving flags helped to encourage each team during the kibasen.

It was a great to use what we studied in English class to make something that each class can use for the rest of the year.

5th Grade : How many key chains?

5th grade students had a class studying two different topics. Recently they have been studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?` and since the students didn't finish their presentations of their T-shirts in the last class we used the first part of this class to complete that topic. We also started a new topic, Hi, friends!1 Lesson 3 `How many?`. It was a very busy lesson!

We started class with our usual greeting games. Ms. Emily and one of the students did a demonstration. We wanted to demonstration that you can have more than one answer to a "What ~ do you like?" question.
IMG_1581.jpg "What colors do you like?"
"I like red, yellow and purple."
"Nice!"

After watching the demonstration it was time for all the students to greet each other.
IMG_1643.jpg Good gestures! Gestures are a very important part of communication!

IMG_1584.jpg Nice smile! Good job!

IMG_1614.jpg Great eye contact! We need to look at each other when we talk.

The students enjoyed asking each other all sorts of questions.
IMG_1647.jpg "What animals do you like?"
"I like cats."

Some students even used phrases they had previously studied in Tomilish Time.
IMG_1622.jpg "What sports do you like?"
"Guess what?"
"Hmmm....."

IMG_1586.jpg Everyone tried hard to talk to many different people.

After the greeting game the teachers asked the students who they had talked to and what they said. This helps the students to realise the importance of listening carefully when they are speaking with each other.
edited1.jpg "I asked about what colors she likes and she said that she likes purple and green."

Next, we had the remaining students, who had not talked about their T-shirt designs in the previous class, complete their presentations.
IMG_1653.jpg "Who designed this T-shirt?"

The students talked about how they designed their T-shirts.
IMG_1594.jpg "I thought about the shapes they said they like. They like stars the best so I made the star the biggest."

The students receiving the T-shirts also talked about what they liked.
IMG_1648.jpg "I like these colors."

IMG_1631.jpg "It's nice!"

After the presentations the students wrote their feedback about this topic.
IMG_1664.jpg Many students were happy to learn about what shapes and colors their friends like.

We had some students present what they wrote.
IMG_1600.jpg "It was fun to design t-shirts while thinking about the other person."

Next, we had `Teacher Talk` for the start of our new topic, Hi, friends!1 Unit 3 `How many?`. When Ms. Mayumi visited Rakuten with the 5th grade students she noticed that one of the students had many keychains on their backpack. She borrowed the backpack so everyone could count the keychains together.
"How many keychains?"
IMG_1603.jpg "18, 19, 20, 21! 21 keychains!"
"Wow! So many!"

After that, we did the chants from Let's Try!1 Unit 3 `How many?`.
IMG_1666.jpg Since it was the first time to hear the chant we listened a few times before trying to say as much of the chant as we could together.

Lastly, we played rock, paper, scissors (janken) in pairs. The teachers did a demonstration first. Everyone played ten times.
IMG_1609.jpg "Rock, paper, scissors. 1, 2, 3!"

IMG_1668.jpg The students really enjoyed this activity.

IMG_1610.jpg They wrote a circle if they won, a triangle if they drew and a cross if they lost. Then everyone counted their shapes.

"How many circles? Raise your hand. 1 circle!"
IMG_1612.jpg Good job everyone! It was a fun class!

5th Grade : T-shirt Design Presentations

5th grade students had their fourth class studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. In the previous class the students had interviewed their friends and designed t-shirts for them. In this class the students presented the t-shirts that they had designed.

Here are some of the t-shirts that the students designed:
This t-shirt was designed for a student who likes starts, diamonds, circles, red, blue and yellow.
IMG_1537.jpg Oh! Nice Doraemon!

This t-shirt was designed for a student that likes circles, crosses, green and blue.
IMG_1541.jpg Great design!

After our usual greetings the students did the chant from Let's Try!1. They did the "What color do you like?" chant and then using the same chant's karaoke version everyone chanted "What shape do you like?".

Next, we confirmed our goal for the class.
IMG_1490.jpg "Let's give our friends the t-shirts we designed for them."

First, the teachers showed a picture on the screen and asked "Who designed this t-shirt?"
IMG_1495.jpg "Me!"

"Who is this t-shirt for?"
" It's for ~san."
"Come here, please"
In this way the students came to the front of the class in pairs to present their t-shirts.
IMG_1515.jpg "Let's watch!"

The students talked about why they chose their design. We aimed for the students to think a lot about what the other person would like.
"This is for you."
"Blue stars and pink circles."
IMG_1535.jpg The students could use Japanese to explain their reasoning.

Everyone checked with the student who would receive the t-shirt:
"What shapes/colors do you like?"
IMG_1521.jpg After answering those questions the student said what they thought about the t-shirt. "Great! I want 3 more t-shirts with this design!"

The students tried their best to create t-shirts that their friends would like.
IMG_1525.jpg "Wow! It could be sold in Uniqlo!"

The teachers would ask the students listening questions, too.
"What shapes does he like?"
IMG_1516.jpg "Stars!"
"That's right!"

The students used English to exchange their t-shirt designs.
IMG_1488.jpg "Here you are!"

"Thank you!"
IMG_1540.jpg"You are welcome!"

Nice work, 5th grade students!

5th Grade : Let's design t-shirts!

5th grade students had their third class studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. In this class they designed t-shirts for their friends after asking about the shapes and colors that they like.

We started class with our usual greeting game.
IMG_1416.jpg The homeroom teacher and one student gave a demonstration of what to do.

Next everyone used the English they knew to ask questions. We told them students that we would ask them who they talked to and what they said after the game so they did their best to remember what everyone said.
IMG_1444.jpg "Hello!"

"What's your favorite subject?"
"Guess what?"
IMG_1426.jpg "Hmmm...let me think..."

"What fruits do you like?"
IMG_1418.jpg "I like strawberries."

"What sports do you like?"
IMG_1423.jpg "I like basketball!"
"Me, too!"

After the greeting game we did the chants and then confirmed the goal for the class.
edited.jpg Everyone was excited to design their t-shirts.

After watching a demonstration by the teachers it was time for everyone else to try.
IMG_1428.jpg The most important thing that everyone kept in mind from the teachers demonstration was to keep eye contact.

"What shapes do you like?"
"I like hearts and stars."
IMG_1453.jpg Great eye contact!

After both people had finished talking about what shapes and colors they like then the students could take notes.
IMG_1434.jpg The students tried not to used any Japanese.

They used their crayons to note the colors.
IMG_1413.jpg They drew pictures to note the shapes.

Next, it was time to design the t-shirts. Everyone tried hard to make a t-shirt that their partner would like.
IMG_1438.jpg Nice colors!

IMG_1437.jpg Great design!

In the next class then all the of students will present their designs. We had some students who had finished early to present their design at the end of this class.
IMG_1441.jpg Everyone asked together "What colors do you like?", "What shapes do you like?" and they checked the t-shirt to see that it matched the persons tastes. Lastly the designer said a few sentences in Japanese about what they thought about when designing the t-shirt.

Good job everyone! We are looking forward to seeing all your designs in the next class!

5th Grade : Let's play Collect 5!

5th grade students had their second class studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. In this class they continued studying about shapes.

After greetings, we started class with a demonstration of our greeting game. We noticed that many 5th grade students have been answering the questions "What ~ do you like?" with the phrase "It's ~." so we used a demonstration with the homeroom teacher using the correct phrase, "I like ~.", to emphasis this.
IMG_1347.jpg "Mr. Kaiwa, what sports do you like?"
"I like basketball!"

Before the greeting game the teachers make sure to tell the students that they must speak to a certain number of boys and girls. Everyone did their best to speak to many different people.
IMG_1331.jpg "What food do you like?"

IMG_1359.jpg "What color do you like?"

After the greeting game the teachers picked some students and asked them who they talked to as well as what they said. If the students know they will be asked about who they talked to they try hard to remember what their friends say.
IMG_1363.jpg "She said she likes sky blue."

Next, Ms. Emily reviewed the pronunciation for shapes in English.
IMG_1351.jpg The word `rectangle` is the most difficult for everyone.

Then, we did the chant. We used the karaoke version and practiced splitting the chant in two so one group asked the question "What shape do you like?" and the other group answered.
IMG_1338.jpg Here the teachers are listening to the students ask "What shape do you like?"

After practicing as a class the students also did the chant in pairs.
IMG_1343.jpg The students could answer with their favorite shapes.

Finally we played the `Collect 5` game. Students tried to collect 5 cards with the same shape by playing janken with their friends. The winner could talk about the shape they liked and receive that shape's card.
IMG_1371.jpg "What shape do you like?"

We stopped the activity half-way through and got some students to give a good demonstration.
IMG_1346.jpg "When he didn't have the card she wanted he said `Sorry!`. That's great!"

Next, everyone kept the good points of the demonstration in mind while they continued with the activity.
IMG_1367.jpg Everyone had a lot of fun!
Good job 5th grade students!

5th Grade : What shape do you like?

This week 5th grade students have started to studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. They used this first class to interview their classmates about their favorite shape in order to add it to their class flags for sports day.

After our usual greetings we did a greeting game.
IMG_1121.jpg The homeroom teacher and one of the students did a demonstration for everyone to see. 5th grade students are focusing on using the English they know as well as talking to many different people.

After watching the demonstration it was time to greet.
IMG_1155.jpg Good eye contact!

IMG_1186.jpg Nice smiles!

Next, we did the chant. This time we are using the chant from Let's Try!1 Unit 5 `What do you like?`.
edited.jpg We listen at first and then tried to do the chant using gestures.

After the chant we listened to the teachers talking. They asked each other the question "What shape do you like?".
IMG_1165.jpg "I like hearts. Look! I have a heart stamp!"
The students guessed that today's topic was `shapes`.

Next, we practiced the pronunciation of shapes in English with Ms. Emily.
IMG_1166.jpg Words that have similar Japanese pronunciations such as `diamond` were a little difficult.

Then, we practiced asking the teachers "What shape do you like?". This allows the students to practice asking the question because they can ask the question with many people. After asking the teachers, we then asked some of the students.
"What shape do you like?"
IMG_1171.jpg"I like crosses."

After practicing as a class we then practiced more in groups by playing a memory game. Everyone in the group would ask one person "What shape do you like?". They had to answer with the shape they like as well as remember what the previous people had said.
IMG_1173.jpg Asking questions with other people is a great confidence builder!

Next, we revealed the main goal for the class.
IMG_1125.jpg "We want to add some shapes to your class flags for sports day. Let's interview your classmates to find the most popular shape for this class."

Before starting the interview the teachers showed the students a demonstration.
IMG_1133.jpgMs. Emily also taught everyone how to tally numbers in Scotland.

"Let's interview!"
IMG_1128.jpg "What shape do you like?"
"I like stars."

Everyone worked very hard to wait until after both they and their partner had finished speaking in order to write down their results. That way they could make good eye contact.
IMG_1145.jpg Good job!

IMG_1182.jpg Nice smile!

Lastly, everyone tallied up their results.
IMG_1136.jpg The teachers asked everyone to raise their hands to find out the number one shape.

"What was your number one shape?"
"Stars?"
IMG_1138.jpg "Wow! Almost everyone found that stars was the most popular shape!"

We are all looking forward to seeing the finished flags at sports day!

5th Grade : What's this?

Long time no see! (お久しぶりです!)
This week English classes started again for the first time since summer vacation. 5th grade students are studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 7 `What's this?`.

It has been a while since everyone used English so we started the classes with some easy and fun activities. We played the greeting game using character cards. One side has a character (Doraemon, Mickey, Sazae, etc.) and the other card has a feeling (happy, tired, cold, etc.). The students swap cards after greeting each other.
DSC_0310.jpg
"Hello! What's your name?"
"My name is Pikachu!"

DSC_0326.jpg"How are you?"
"I'm thirsty!"

DSC_0308.jpg "Here you are!"
"Thank you! See you!"

After doing the greeting game the teachers picked some good students to give a demonstration in front of the class. Everyone had to watch and think about what was good about the demonstration.
edited 3.jpg "Hello! Hello!"

"What was good?"
edited 4.jpg "They made eye contact and greeted each other."
"Good job!"

Next, it was time for the main activity. We did a quiz. Ms. Emily had made a powerpoint with many pictures. There were close-up photos and pictures with mosaic. She asked the question "What's this?". Everyone could here the question many times and get used to it.
DSC_0318.jpg "What's this?"

If it was difficult the students could ask "Hint, please!".
edited.jpg "I know! I know!"

edited 2.jpg "三角定規?”
The students could answer in Japanese. Ms. Emily would teach the English and everyone repeated it. "It's a triangle."

After that, we listen to the new chant.
DSC_0322.jpg Everyone listen a few times and then tried to follow along. Some students started to do the gestures, too.

Lastly, the students filled out their feedback cards. Recently students have been writing their feedback cards for the first and last lessons of the unit.
DSC_0325.jpg Students wrote about what they realised during the class. "バット and コウモリ are the same word in English, `Bat`!"

Good job everyone! It was a fun class!

5th Grade : Sports Day Flags

Recently we have shown lessons where 5th grade students have been using English to design class flags for sports day. Read again by clicking here and here.

After the English classes the students knew the top 3 shapes and colors for their class. Then they all chose an English word to represent their class. The students then used the shapes and colors, as well as the English word, to design their class flag.

5th grade students used the flags at Sports Day during their `Cavalry Battle` (騎馬戦).
DSC_8790.jpg The students all gathered with their flags!

It's a little hard to see in the sports day pictures so we took some close-ups. First we'll introduce class 5-1's flag. Their class color is red so the main color is red. Here are the results of their English class survey:
Top 3 colors:
1. Blue 2. Yellow 3. Green
Top 3 shapes:
1. Stars 2. Circles 3. Diamonds
5−1.jpg The most popular color and shape are used in the center of the flag. The chose the word `fire`. It goes well with the color red! Nice design!

Here is an action shot!
DSC_8805.jpg Before the `battles` each class gave a cheer. The students waved their flag strongly.

Next is class 5-3's flag. Their class color is yellow so the main color is yellow. Here are the results of their English class survey:
Top 3 colors:
1. Purple 2. Blue 3. Green
Top 3 shapes:
1. Diamonds 2. Stars 3. Circles
5−3.jpg They chose the word `passion`. They wanted to compete with passion. It's a nice flag!
During each battle some 6th grade students held the flag so the 5th grade students could `battle`!
DSC_8816.jpg The `horses` and `riders` are ready to fight!

Last is class 5-2's flag. Their class color is blue so the main color is blue. Here are the results of their English class survey:
Top 3 colors:
1. Green 2. Purple 3. Red
Top 3 shapes:
1. Diamonds 2. Stars 3. Circles
5−2.jpg The students chose the word `victory`. It showed their strong desire to win!
Class 2 students won the battle! They did a victory lap.
DSC_8861.jpg Their Queen held the flag during their victory lap. Well done!

The students will take the flags with them on their school trip. They will climb a mountain and take a picture with the flag at the top. Making the flags was a great way to use English! Great job everyone!

5th Grade: Making shapes and Interviews

5th grade students continued this week in their project to create class flags for sports day.

After doing the chants, we played a game making shapes with our bodies.
DSC_0022.jpg The students got into groups of 5 or 6. Then they asked Ms. Emily, "What shape do you like?". They had to make the shape Ms. Emily said. These two groups are making circles.

Do you know what shape this is?
DSC_0025.jpg It's a star! Can you see it?

After playing the game we interviewed our classmates to find out the most popular colors and shapes in the class. We used a worksheet to record our answers.
DSC_0059.jpg "Here you are!"

"What shape do you like?"
DSC_0064.jpg "I like stars!". Nice eye contact!

Halfway through the activity the teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration. "Let's watch!"
DSC_0011.jpg Great smile!

Then the students continued with the activity trying to copy the good points about the demonstration.
DSC_0075.jpg Nice eye contact and smiles!

After the interviews the teachers collected the results.
DSC_0079.jpg Who has 'orange' as their number one color? Raise your hand.

Let's count.
DSC_0017.jpg 1, 2, 3, 4, 5....

We used the results to discover the top 3 colors and shapes.
DSC_0021.jpg The students will use these to design their class flag.

Everyone is looking forward to seeing what kind of flags the students design!

5th Grade: Hi, friends! 1 Lesson 5

5th grade students are going to create class flags for Sports Day at the end of May. In order to do this, they are going to interview their classmates about their favorite colors and shapes in English class. We are going to study Lesson 5 now so that we can make the flags in time for Sports Day.

Last year the students studied 'What do you like?' and colors so it is not difficult for them to learn 'What color do you like?' as well as the names for shapes. This week we played two games in class.

The first game we played is the chain game. The students make groups and decide their order.
DSC_0024.jpg Then they ask the first person "What color do you like?".
"I like yellow."

The next person has to remember what they said and say two colors.
"I like yellow and blue."
This continues until all students in the group have finished.
DSC_0042.jpg What color do you like?

Next we did the same game using shapes.
DSC_0043.jpg What shape do you like?

Then we played the ladder and snake game.
DSC_0049.jpg The students played rock, paper, scissors to decide their order.

During the game everyone asks the question "What color do you like?" together.
DSC_0050.jpg Nice gestures! The person who rolled the dice answers with the color they landed on.

Next week we will start interview practice. Everyone is looking forward to designing the class flags. I wonder what colors and shapes will be popular!
