6th Grade : Do you have `p`?

6th grade students had their third class on Hi, friends!2 Lesson 1 'Do you have `a`?' recently.

We started class with a greeting game as usual. Some students volunteered to give a demonstration.
IMG_0988.jpg "What's your favorite color?"
"Guess what?"
"Hint, please."
"Mix red and blue."
"Oh! Purple?"
"Yes! I like purple!"
Nice hint!

After watching the demonstration everyone started to greet each other.
IMG_0990.jpg Nice gestures!

IMG_0989.jpg Great eye contact!

IMG_0991.jpg Good job!

IMG_0997.jpgNice smiles!

Next, we did the alphabet chant. The teachers picked some students to dance at the front with Ms. Emily and encourage everyone else to dance.
IMG_1000.jpg Nice dancing!

IMG_0999.jpg Everyone enjoyed dancing and doing the chant!

Next, we played some alphabet games. First, we played `Collect 5`. The students had to ask their friends and try to collect 5 of the same letters of the alphabet.
IMG_0924.jpg "Do you have `g`?"

"Yes, I do!"
IMG_0925.jpg "Here you are!"

Another game we played was `Matching pairs`. Each person chose 10 letters of the alphabet. They took turns to ask their partner questions to try and make pairs. The person with the most pairs won.
IMG_1008.jpg "Do you have `p`?"

Everyone counted the number of pairs they made at the end of the game.
IMG_1017.jpg One of the students managed to make 5 pairs! Wow!

Our last game was the `Alphabet Circle` game. We gave each student a card with a letter of the alphabet and they had to try and make a circle in order of the alphabet by asking their friends, "Do you have `g`?" and answering "Yes, I do. / No, I don't. I have `e`.".
IMG_1022.jpg This game needed a lot of teamwork.

IMG_0918.jpg The students had to ask many people questions.

IMG_1023.jpg They tried to put themselves in the right order.

IMG_0931.jpg "We did it! We made an alphabet circle!"

The teachers then checked that the circle was in the right order.
IMG_1026.jpg Well done everyone! You did it!

6th Grade : Secret Message Game

6th grade students recently had their second English class of the week. They continued studying Hi, friends!2 Lesson 1 'Do you have `a`?'. In this class they continued become familiar with lower case letters of the alphabet as well as becoming familiar with the numbers 1-100.

This year, as a step-up from the previous year, the class leaders for that day have been starting class.
IMG_0796.jpg "Stand up, please!"
"Let's make eye contact and smile!"

Next, we did our greeting game. For the past few classes the students have been sitting in pairs and trying to continue long conversations. This time the students could freely walk around the classroom but they had to try and continue speaking for as long as they could.
IMG_0803.jpg "What's your favorite color?"
"I like blue."

IMG_0781.jpg Nice gestures!

IMG_0805.jpg Great smile!

After the greeting game we practiced the numbers. We especially practiced the difference between similar sounding numbers such as 16 and 60.
IMG_0808.jpg "Numbers like 60 are short. Don't make the sound long."

Then, we played the same number game that we played in the previous class except we used the numbers 61-100.
DSCN9013.jpg First the teachers did a demonstration.

Then everyone played the game. We had to be careful to say all the numbers in English. The students could ask the teachers for help if they couldn't remember how to pronounce a number.
IMG_0782.jpg Some of the games became intense. The students were very focused!

Some of the students wanted to battle their teachers, too.
IMG_0811.jpg Everyone tried hard to win. You can do it!

After playing the game a few times, it was time for the alphabet song.
DSCN9029.jpg The students have become very used to this song so we only did the karaoke version.

Next, we did the alphabet quiz. Ms. Emily showed some folded lower case letters and everyone had to guess what they were.
IMG_0786.jpg "What's this?"
"y? v? x? w?"

Ms. Emily compared the folded letters to letters on the blackboard as the students suggested some answers.
IMG_0783.jpg"h?"
"h...yes, it could be an `h`."

The students thought very hard about the shapes of the different letters.
IMG_0788.jpg "Oh! I know! I know! It's `n`!!"

Lastly, we played the secret message game.
DSCN9019.jpgThe teachers told everyone some numbers that we used to find the secret word.

The students had to listen to the numbers very carefully.
DSCN9018.jpg"What number was it? 87?"

We checked the answers together.
DSCN9020.jpg Can you tell what the secret word was? The missing letters are o, c, k. It's the name of a watch brand. It was the most difficult quiz!

At the end of the class the teachers asked the students to talk about what similarities and differences they had noticed between the letters.
IMG_0818.jpg "b and d look very similar."
"Yes, that's right! It's easy to make a mistake with these letters."

Good job 6th grade!

6th Grade: Numbers and Lower Case Letters

After finishing orientation last week, 6th grade students have started studying Hi, friends!2 Lesson 1 'Do you have `a`?'. In this class they tried to become familiar with lower case letters of the alphabet as well as the numbers 31-60.

We started class with a greeting game. The students had to try and speak in pairs for as long as they could using English. They could ask each other many questions.
IMG_0762.jpg "How do you spell your name?"

The teachers got some of the students to give a good example.
IMG_0753.jpg Clear voices! Good job!

After the greeting game we did the alphabet chant. We did different versions of the chant such as the teacher pointing to letters and the students saying those letters in a loud voice or skipping those letters. We also danced to the chant.
edited.jpg The students have become very good at doing the dance. It's very fun.

Next, we did the number game. First, we practiced saying the numbers 1-60.
IMG_0761.jpg Everyone said the numbers together.

Next, the students got into pairs and each person could say between 1 and 3 numbers. The person who said the number 30 was the winner.
IMG_0757.jpg The students used a number sheet to check as they said the numbers.

After playing once using the numbers 1-30, they changed partners and did the game again with the numbers 31-60.
IMG_0756.jpg It was a fun way to practice numbers.

Last, we looking at some pictures taken around the school and tried to see what alphabet we could find.
IMG_0735.jpg We see this sign every day.

Some of the posters also have English on them.
IMG_0733.jpg So cute!

The English posters in the school have both upper and lower case letters.
IMG_0729.jpg The students are going to search for lower case letters in their daily lives. It will be interesting to see how many they can find.

Good job everyone!

6th Grade : Do you have a dog?

This week students had their last lesson on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 1 "Do you have `a`?". This class focused on using the phrase "Do you have~?" without asking about the alphabet.

Let's interview our classmates! If they say yes, write a circle. If they say no, write a cross.

After the teacher demonstration two students volunteered to give a demonstration.
IMG_7482.jpg This is a great way to check that students understand the rules without using Japanese.

There were many questions so students could spend a long time using English and talking to many different people.
Let's talk to the teachers, too!
IMG_7498.jpg "Mr. Kimura, do you have a dog?"
"Yes, I do!"

IMG_7492.jpg Great eye contact! It's difficult to remember to make eye contact when you are holding a paper. Nice job!

Great job everyone! There were many teachers watching but everyone did their best!

6th Grade: Alphabet Matching Game

This week class 6-2 had an English demonstration class. All the teachers in the school and some teachers from other schools came to watch too.

First the students sang and danced the alphabet song. Do you know what letter this is?
IMG_7345.jpg It's Z!

Ms. Emily and Ms. Keiko gave a demonstration of the activity.
DSC01586.jpg "Do you have `a`?" "No, I don't. Sorry."

The classroom was full of shops. The shop signs had missing letters. The students had to ask their friends for letters to fix the signs.
close up.jpg Do you recognise these shops?

Everyone had to keep their card a secret.
DSC01589.jpg Don't show!!

Ms. Keiko picked some students to give a good demonstration. Let's watch!
IMG_7365.jpg Nice eye contact!

Everyone continued the activity while thinking about the good demonstration.
DSC01594.jpg Great smiles!

You found a letter! Let's stick it on the sign with velcro (magic tape).
IMG_7362.jpg Good job!

After almost all the letters were found everyone went back to their seats. Students who still had their cards came to the front and everyone asked them together.
IMG_7371.jpg "Do you have `r`?" "Yes, I do!"

It was a fun activity. Everyone realised how many Japanese shops have English signs. It was surprising!

6th Grade: Alphabet Message Game

6th grade students have been studying both upper case (big) and lower case (small) letters. This week we played an alphabet message game.

First we all sang and danced the alphabet song.
DSC_0005.jpg Dancing makes it more interesting to sing!

Then, the students watched a demonstration.
DSC_0007.jpg The teachers showed on student some big letters (TV).

Next the student had to trace those letters on their friends back in order to pass the message.
DSC_0008.jpg You have to picture the letter in your head.

The last person in the line has to pick out the letters from a table.
DSC_0011.jpg Oh no! All these letters are lower case letters! This makes it more challenging!!

Let's start!
Some students use there finger to draw on their hand. It helps them to picture the letter.
DSC_0032.jpg Hmmm....I'm not sure. One more time please!

Next let's pick the letters.
DSC_0016.jpg We have to think hard.

It was a very fun game! We want to play it again next time!
