6th Grade : Let's make our skits better!

Today 6th grade students had their fourth class on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 7 `We are good friends`. They have been making their own original Momotaro skits. In the last class they received advice from their classmates about how to improve their skits. They used that advice to work on making their skits better in this class.

For our usual 3 questions during greeting time we had the students ask the questions instead of Ms. Emily.

DSC_4042.jpg "What day is it today?"

After two years of listening to the questions every English class it is good for the students to try to ask the questions themselves.

After the greetings, Ms. Keiko explained about the 3 prizes that we will give in the next class after watching the skits peformances.

Best Story prize
Best Teamwork prize
It's possible that the same team could win all three prizes or three different teams could get the prizes.

The prizes gave students motivation to practice hard in the class.

6th Grade : Let's give each other advice

This week 6th grade students had their third class on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 7 `We are good friends`. They have been making their own original Momotaro skits. Since this class in the half-way point in the unit we decided that it would be a good time to check everyones' progress.

Usually after greetings, Ms. Emily asks the students three questions:
"How is the weather today?"
"What day is it today?"
"What is the date today?"
As the students have been answering these questions for two years we decided it would be a good challenge for the students to ask the questions instead.
DSC_3905.jpg These three students volunteered to ask the questions. In the next class we'll ask three different students to try.

We asked each of the three groups to show around 1/3 of their skit.
DSC_3904.jpgThe groups took turns to show the beginning, middle or end of their skit while everyone watched.

Here is a preview of some of the action:

As you can tell their skits are very original! After watching the other students gave advice.
DSC_3917.jpg "Your voices were a little small. Please speak louder."

DSC_3912.jpg "The story was hard to follow. Please add more gestures"

After listening to the advice the groups had a short time to discuss the advice they were given.
DSC_3898.jpg "Let's change this scene so it's easier to understand."

Next week, we have our last two English classes for the school year. We will use one class to practice our skits and then everyone will perform in the last English classes. Watching the skits will be very interesting!

This activity needs a lot of teamwork.
DSC_3744.jpg Everyone talked about their ideas together.

The students also split into smaller groups to try and think about their actions and movements.

In the following pictures the students are practicing their acting. Can you tell what scenes in Momotaro they are performing?

6th Grade : Let's make original Momotaro skits!

6th grade students have just had their first class on a new topic. This will be their last topic for the school year. They have been studying Hi,friends!2 Lesson 7 `We are good friends`. As the students have to make original skits in this topic we decided to do it last so that the students could use as much of the English that they have learned as possible.

At first the teachers split the students into 3 groups per class of around 10 students. Then they explained the rules of making a skit.
DSC_3579.jpg Every student has to have a speaking part. There are no narrators. They can add original characters and storylines. The skits have to have a happy ending. They have to use gestures and actions to make difficult English easy for everyone to understand.

After everyone understood what they had to do, it was time for all the groups to begin planning. Our goal for the first class was for all students to decide their characters and a rough storyline for their group.
DSC_3592.jpg "You can be Peach Boy."

The teachers helped everyone to think of ideas.
DSC_3597.jpg "You are very good at janken. Why doesn't Momotaro janken the demons instead of fighting them?"

Everyone tried hard to think of interesting and funny skits.
DSC_3582.jpg "Nice idea!"

"..and then Doraemon arrives and fights the demons!"
DSC_3572.jpg "That's a funny idea!"

After the groups had a rough idea of their storyline they tried to work out the movements of the characters and their lines (¥»¥ê¥Õ).
DSC_3575.jpg Can you tell what they are doing?

DSC_3573.jpg Do you know what characters they are?

Everyone is looking forward to seeing the finished results!
