6th Grade: Alphabet Matching Game

This week class 6-2 had an English demonstration class. All the teachers in the school and some teachers from other schools came to watch too.

First the students sang and danced the alphabet song. Do you know what letter this is?
IMG_7345.jpg It's Z!

Ms. Emily and Ms. Keiko gave a demonstration of the activity.
DSC01586.jpg "Do you have `a`?" "No, I don't. Sorry."

The classroom was full of shops. The shop signs had missing letters. The students had to ask their friends for letters to fix the signs.
close up.jpg Do you recognise these shops?

Everyone had to keep their card a secret.
DSC01589.jpg Don't show!!

Ms. Keiko picked some students to give a good demonstration. Let's watch!
IMG_7365.jpg Nice eye contact!

Everyone continued the activity while thinking about the good demonstration.

You found a letter! Let's stick it on the sign with velcro (magic tape).
IMG_7362.jpg Good job!

After almost all the letters were found everyone went back to their seats. Students who still had their cards came to the front and everyone asked them together.
IMG_7371.jpg "Do you have `r`?" "Yes, I do!"

It was a fun activity. Everyone realised how many Japanese shops have English signs. It was surprising!

Tomilish Time: Let's mix classes!

This week Tomilish Time was not a broadcast. We had ³Øǯ Tomilish Time. Some grades gathered together as a grade and other grades mixed classes.
Every did a greeting game but the homeroom teachers adapted the difficulty to the level of the students.

6th grade students all gathered in one room. They had to find people who like the same color as them and make a group.
DSC01575.jpg Do you like purple? Yes, I do!

5th grade students also all gathered together. The teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration to everyone.
DSC_0020.jpg "How are you?" Great gestures!

In 4th grade, different classes did different things. This class made two circles. Once they had finished greeting, the outside circle moved round to the next person.
DSC01570.jpg Everyone can easily talk to many people. Nice job!

3rd grade students asked each other "How are you?".
DSC_0013.jpg Good eye contact!

5th Grade: Making shapes and Interviews

5th grade students continued this week in their project to create class flags for sports day.

After doing the chants, we played a game making shapes with our bodies.
DSC_0022.jpg The students got into groups of 5 or 6. Then they asked Ms. Emily, "What shape do you like?". They had to make the shape Ms. Emily said. These two groups are making circles.

Do you know what shape this is?
DSC_0025.jpg It's a star! Can you see it?

After playing the game we interviewed our classmates to find out the most popular colors and shapes in the class. We used a worksheet to record our answers.
DSC_0059.jpg "Here you are!"

"What shape do you like?"
DSC_0064.jpg "I like stars!". Nice eye contact!

Halfway through the activity the teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration. "Let's watch!"
DSC_0011.jpg Great smile!

Then the students continued with the activity trying to copy the good points about the demonstration.
DSC_0075.jpg Nice eye contact and smiles!

After the interviews the teachers collected the results.
DSC_0079.jpg Who has 'orange' as their number one color? Raise your hand.

Let's count.
DSC_0017.jpg 1, 2, 3, 4, 5....

We used the results to discover the top 3 colors and shapes.
DSC_0021.jpg The students will use these to design their class flag.

Everyone is looking forward to seeing what kind of flags the students design!

5th Grade: Hi, friends! 1 Lesson 5

5th grade students are going to create class flags for Sports Day at the end of May. In order to do this, they are going to interview their classmates about their favorite colors and shapes in English class. We are going to study Lesson 5 now so that we can make the flags in time for Sports Day.

Last year the students studied 'What do you like?' and colors so it is not difficult for them to learn 'What color do you like?' as well as the names for shapes. This week we played two games in class.

The first game we played is the chain game. The students make groups and decide their order.
DSC_0024.jpg Then they ask the first person "What color do you like?".
"I like yellow."

The next person has to remember what they said and say two colors.
"I like yellow and blue."
This continues until all students in the group have finished.
DSC_0042.jpg What color do you like?

Next we did the same game using shapes.
DSC_0043.jpg What shape do you like?

Then we played the ladder and snake game.
DSC_0049.jpg The students played rock, paper, scissors to decide their order.

During the game everyone asks the question "What color do you like?" together.
DSC_0050.jpg Nice gestures! The person who rolled the dice answers with the color they landed on.

Next week we will start interview practice. Everyone is looking forward to designing the class flags. I wonder what colors and shapes will be popular!

6th Grade: Alphabet Message Game

6th grade students have been studying both upper case (big) and lower case (small) letters. This week we played an alphabet message game.

First we all sang and danced the alphabet song.
DSC_0005.jpg Dancing makes it more interesting to sing!

Then, the students watched a demonstration.
DSC_0007.jpg The teachers showed on student some big letters (TV).

Next the student had to trace those letters on their friends back in order to pass the message.
DSC_0008.jpg You have to picture the letter in your head.

The last person in the line has to pick out the letters from a table.
DSC_0011.jpg Oh no! All these letters are lower case letters! This makes it more challenging!!

Let's start!
Some students use there finger to draw on their hand. It helps them to picture the letter.
DSC_0032.jpg Hmmm....I'm not sure. One more time please!

Next let's pick the letters.
DSC_0016.jpg We have to think hard.

It was a very fun game! We want to play it again next time!

Next the students played a greeting game in their classes. Each homeroom teacher tried to make the game interesting!
DSC_0016.jpg 5th grade students are having fun!

6th grade students are great at greeting.
DSC_0009.jpg Nice smiles!

6th grade students greeted each other in the corridor.
DSC_0033.jpg It was a fun twist on the activity.

The homeroom teachers always have great ideas to improve the activities so it is interesting for everyone!

Sports Day Posters

There is one big event at the end of May for our school. Do you know what it is? It's Sports Day (±¿Æ°²ñ)! This month the Display Committee (·Ç¼¨°Ñ°÷²ñ) have made posters on the theme of Sports Day.

This is the display that is in the entrance of the school.
IMG_8235.jpg The pictures are all from Ms. Emily's (our ALT) elementary school Sports Day in Scotland.

The students were most surprised that there are no opening or closing ceremonies at a Sports Day in Scotland.
IMG_8236.jpg In the picture on the right you can see one of the events 'standing long jump'. The older students are helping to write down the scores.

Another event is the '3-legged-race'. We have this even in Japan, too!
IMG_8237.jpg The students are split into 3 teams (red, white and blue). They don't compete as a class. Ms. Emily was in the blue team.

Do you know this event? It's called the 'potato sack race'. You have to get into a big sack and jump to the finish. It is so fun! Everyone wants to try it!
IMG_8238.jpg Sports Day takes place on a weekday so many parents are working. Some parents still come to watch.

Two more events are the 'egg and spoon race' and the 'tug-of-war'. We do the 'tug-of-war' in Japan, too!
IMG_8239.jpg All the events are held on the grass soccer field. This is very different to Tomizawa Elementary School. There is no sand!

Some of the students made their poster into a quiz! Nice job!
IMG_8240.jpg

We hope everyone will enjoy learning about Sports Day in another country!
