On December 6th, we had our open school event (公開研究会). Close to 500 people from all over Japan came to watch our classes. Thank you for coming! Thank you to everyone who helped with the preparations and smooth running of the event, too.

The 3rd grade students had their fourth class on the topic "This is for you". You can see the previous three classes here:

We started the class with our usual greetings.
"Hello everyone! Let's start English class!"

Next, we did the `Greeting Game`. The students had to give good reactions and to praise something about their friends.
"How are you?"
"I'm happy, thank you."
"Nice!"

"Nice shirt!"
"Thank you"

Next, we reviewed the names for shapes in English.
"What's this?"
"It's a diamond."

After reviewing shapes we did the "What do you want?" chant.
"What do you want?"
"A star, please."
"Here you are."
"Thank you!"

Then, we reviewed how to ask and answer what someone wants.
"It's a fried egg. What do you want?"
"Soy sauce, please."

"Potato chips. What do you want?"
"Cheese, please."

After reviewing we had `Teacher Talk`.
"Look. Cat cards. This is for you! What do you want?"
"A black cat card, please."
"Here you are."
"Thank you."

We reviewed the goal for the class together and then the teachers did a demonstration of the main activity.
"What do you want?"
"A green card, please."
"OK! What do you want?"
"A triangle, please."
"OK! What do you want?"
"A cat, please."

The teachers had prepared many shapes, stickers and different colored cards for the students to use.
"Let's make cards!"

The students made pairs and ask each other many questions in order to make cards.
"What do you want?"
"A pink card, please."

"What do you want?"
"A heart, please"

Half-way through the activity the teachers asked some students to give a good demonstration.

Next, everyone tried to think about the good points of the demonstration as the pairs swapped roles.

The students covered their eyes as their friends finished the cards and wrote a message to them in Japanese.
"I wonder what my card will be like!"

After everyone completed their cards they gave them to their friends.
Everyone was excited to open their cards and read the messages.

The students talked about their cards and why their friends made them.
"I like green!"

"How did you feel to receive your card?"
"I felt happy!"

We finished the class with the students reflections on the class and saying goodbye.
"Have a nice day!"

3rd grade students had their third class on the topic `This is for you`. They continued to practice using the phrase `What do you want?`.

We started class with our usual greeting game. The students had to praise one thing about the other person after asking them "How are you?".
"Nice t-shirt!"
"Thank you! See you!"

After the greeting game we did the chant.
"What do you want?" "A star, please."

After practicing the names for shapes, we also practiced how to ask and answer the question "What do you want?". We reviewed by doing the same activity as the previous class.
"What do you want?"
"Chocolate ice cream!"

Then it was time for Teacher Talk. The teachers like to show the many different situations that the phrase `What do you want?` can be used. This time they pretended to be at the supermarket.
"What do you want?"
"Potato chips, please! So delicious!"

Some students also took a turn.
"Grapes, please!"

After that we played the `Collect 5` game. The teachers gave a demonstration first so the students understood what to do. The students had 5 cards with shapes on them. They tried to collect 5 of the same shape.
"What do you want?"
"A star, please!"

Halfway through the activity the teachers picked some students to give a good example.
They are making good eye contact! Everyone should to careful to make eye contact when speaking to their partner.

3rd grade students had their second class on the topic `This is for you`. In the last class the students studied the names for shapes in English and realised the different kinds of cards that people send. In this class we introduced the phrase "What do you want?".

First, we reviewed the names for shapes.
"What's this?" "Circle!" "That's right! Circle!"

Next, we did the chant. Mr. Shuhei made the original chant for us. Thank you!

"What do you want?"
"A rectangle, please!"

After the chant we played the flag quiz. We looked at the flags from many countries. "What shape do you see?"
"A red circle!"

"What shape do you see?"
"Stars!"
"Where are the stars? Show me!"
"Here! Stars!"
"Good job!"

The students drew the shapes with their hands while looking at the flags.
"Rectangle!"

Next, we introduced the phrase "What do you want?". First the teachers did a demonstration. Then the students helped to do a demonstration, too.
"Potato chips! What do you want?"
"Hmmm...."

"Barbeque, please!"
"Here you are!"
"Thank you!"

"Fried egg. What do you want?"
"Ketchup, please!"
"Here you are!"

After the teacher-teacher demonstration and teacher-student demonstration it was time for the student-student demonstration.
"Two volunteers, please!"
"Me! Me!"

This time the students asked about second helpings of today's lunch.
"School lunch! What do you want?"
"Soup, please!"

After the demonstrations the students got into pairs and asked each other many "What do you want?" questions.
"Milk, please!"

Nice smiles!"

"What do you want?"
"Strawberry ice cream, please!"

Lastly, the teachers picked two students to give a good demonstration. Everyone watched and thought about the good points.
