6th Grade : I saw ghosts!

6th grade students have been practicing talking about things they did and saw during summer vacation. Since they have talked about their summer vacation so much, in this last class we talked about the previous weekend.
DSC_0670.jpg This was our last full class on this topic. We will also practice this a few times during Tomilish Time in the future.

First we did our usual greeting game. We practiced using all the English we have studied so far. The teachers did a demonstration first.
DSC_0746.jpg "I can swim very well. Can you swim?"
"No, I can't."
"But, you can play basketball."
"Oh! That's right!"

The students did their best to continue the conversations with their friends using English for as long as possible.
DSC_0667.jpg "What do you study on Tuesday?"

DSC_0725.jpg "When is your birthday?"

Next, we practiced our original chant. Until now we've always used the same vocabulary but now the students are very used to the chant so we changed the words.
DSC_0669.jpg What did you do?
I went to my grandparents' house.
I ate rice.
I saw ghosts!
It was cold.
Thank you!

After the chant, the teachers demonstrated a conversation using today's new phrase, "I saw...", and talking about the weekend.
DSC_0728.jpg "What did you do at the weekend?"
"I went to a taiko shop. I saw a big taiko drum. It was great!"

The students have studied a lot of different phrases to talk about their past experiences.
DSC_0754.jpg Wow! That's a lot of flashcards! Don't worry. The flashcards are only to give the students ideas.

The students practiced the conversation in pairs first to give them confidence.
DSC_0752.jpg Nice eye contact!

Then, it was time to talk to their classmates.
DSC_0678.jpg Clear voices!

DSC_0684.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_0748.jpg Good job!

Lastly, the teachers picked some students to show a good demonstration.
DSC_0769.jpg Both students have great gestures and reactions! Well done!

Talking about our past experiences (summer vacation and the weekend) was very difficult for everyone but they did a great job!

6th Grade : I enjoyed shopping!

6th grade students just finished their third class talking about their summer vacations. Today we focused on the phrase "I enjoyed..."

First, we did a greeting game. This time instead of telling the students what to say after asking "How are you?", they were free to ask anything that they had studied previously.
The teachers did a demonstration.
DSC_0599.jpg "I like LEGO. Do you like LEGO?"
"Yes, I do. Do you have LEGO?"
"No, I don't."

It was a challenge because everyone asked different questions.
"Can you swim?"
DSC_0577.jpg "Do you like soccer?"

"What do you want?"
DSC_0589.jpg "What's this?"

"When is your birthday?"
DSC_0666.jpg "How many?"

Everyone tried their best to talk to many people. The teachers picked some students to give a good example.
DSC_0548.jpg Great gestures! Nice reactions!

After the greeting game we practiced the original chant.
edited 1.jpg Let's do gestures, too! It helps us to remember.

Ms. Emily and Ms. Keiko demonstrated the new vocabulary.
"I went to Shibuya. I enjoyed shopping."
DSC_0651.jpg"I went to Matsushima. I enjoyed fishing."

We practiced some new vocabulary, too.
DSC_0640.jpg "I enjoyed swimming!"

First, we practiced the conversation in pairs.
DSC_0641.jpg Practicing in pairs gives everyone confidence. It's also a good time to check with the teachers if anyone has any questions.

DSC_0642.jpg Nice eye contact!

After speaking in pairs it was time to walk around the room and talk to many people. What did they enjoy doing in summer vacation?
DSC_0607.jpg Nice reaction!

DSC_0611.jpg Great smile!

DSC_0620.jpg Good gesture!

After the activity the teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration. Sometimes the students volunteered, too: "Our conversation was very good!".
DSC_0596.jpg Great gestures!

DSC_0622.jpg Brilliant smiles!

We have one more English class this week. Everyone is looking forward to it!

6th Grade : I went to Yamagata. It was hot.

6th grade students had their second class on the topic of summer vacations. In the last class the students talked about what they ate "I ate ice cream." and in this class they studied how to talk about where they went.

We started the class with a greeting game. After asking "How are you?" the students had to say something they liked and then praise the other person.
DSC_0514.jpg "I like grey. Nice grey sweater!"
"Thank you!"

The teachers picked some students to give a good example.
DSC_0509.jpg Nice eye contact! Well done!

After the greeting game, the teachers talked to each other about their vacations. "What did you do in summer vacation?"
DSC_0473.jpg "I went to Tokushima. It was hot."

We practiced our original chant. We did the chants in steps. First the students only had to say "I ate ice cream." and the teachers said the rest of the chant.
DSC_0480.jpg As the students improved they had to say more and more sentences.

After doing the chants we practiced the phrases "I went to..." and "It was..."
IMG_8759.jpg"It was great!"
It was a little difficult for the students but they tried their best.

After that, they practiced asking each other in pairs. "What did you do?"
DSC_0428.jpg "I went to Osaka. I ate takoyaki. It was hot."

The teachers helped the students if they had any questions.
DSC_0505.jpg

After working in pairs the students could ask anyone in the classroom.
DSC_0500.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_0426.jpgGood eye contact!

DSC_0493.jpg Great gesture!

At the end of the class the teachers asked the students if they had talked to anyone who had been somewhere interesting. The interesting student came to the front of the class and everyone asked them the question together.
DSC_0442.jpg "What did you do?"

Some of the students had funny answers.
DSC_0519.jpg "I went to Lawson. I ate papico. It was cold and delicious!"

Great job everyone! In the next class we will learn the phrase "I enjoyed..." Let's do our best!

6th Grade : What did you do in summer vacation?

Now summer vacation has finished it's time for 6th graders to level up their English. This year instead of doing 35 hours of English, we will do 50 hours. This means that we will do some topics that are not in the current Hi,friends! textbook. One of these new topics is `My Summer Vacation`. The 6th grade students had their first class on this topic this week.

First, we introduced some new key words. The students have had 3 key words for the past year: eye contact, smile and clear voice. Since 6th grade students can do these things very well we decided to increase the difficulty. In this class we introduced two new key words. Can you guess what they are?
DSC_0378.jpg They are `gesture` and `reaction`. This year the students will be working hard to remember all five key words.

We started the class with Teachers Talk. All the teachers told us about their vacations. Ms. Keiko went to Fukushima and she saw Mt. Bandai. Ms. Emily went to Tokushima and she ate Tokushima ramen. The homeroom teachers all ate a lot of kakigori. After the talk the students had to guess what the teachers had talked about. Everyone realised they were talking about their summer vacations and using different words to talk about the past.

Next, Ms. Emily told us about her summer vacations as an elementary school student in Scotland.
DSC_0347.jpg She enjoyed playing in old houses. She enjoyed going to the beach, too. It was sunny until very late at night so she could play outside until 10pm.

After, that Ms. Emily wanted to know about how Japanese elementary students spent their summer vacation. In this unit we will learn how to talk about our summer vacations so we can tell her about them.

Ms. Emily and Ms. Keiko created a new chant using the karaoke version of the chant from Hi,friends!2 Lesson 5 `Let's go to Italy.`
edited.jpg What did you do?
I went to the beach.
I ate ice cream.
I saw jellyfish.
It was beautiful.
Thank you.

We will focus on a different sentence each class. In this class we practiced "I ate ice cream." First we practiced a little with flashcards. Next, the students go into pairs and asked each other about their summer vacation. "What did you do?"
"I ate Tokushima ramen."
After practicing in pairs they walked around the class and asked their classmates.

"What did you do?"
DSC_0360.jpg "I ate soba."
"Nice!"

DSC_0382.jpg Good smile!

DSC_0381.jpgNice reaction!

DSC_0384.jpg Good job!

After the students had finished we asked them if they had discovered anything surprising. Some of their friends had eaten some unusual things. It was very interesting!

Great work today everyone!
