5th Grade: Do you like summer?

5th grade students have started a new topic. They will study a mix of Let's Try!1 Unit 4 `I like blue.` and Hi,friends!1 Lesson 4 `I like apples.` They have already studied `Do you like~?` a little as 4th grade students so we will only study it briefly this year. Since this phrase is not new to the students we decided to teach them some new vocabulary as well, the names for seasons.

As always, we started class with a greeting game.

"Yes, I do!"

After that, we sang the song `Do you like broccoli icecream?` from Super Simple Songs. First, the students just listened to the song. Next, during the second playing, the students tried to sing along and do gestures, too.

"Do you like broccoli icecream?"
"No, I don't. Yucky!"

Next, we had `Teacher Talk`. Ms. Mayumi showed Ms. Emily some pictures.

"Oh, it looks delicious!"

"What vegetables did you eat?"
IMG_2222.jpg "Carrots, cabbage and broccoli."
"Do you like carrots?"
"Yes, I do!"
"Do you know ½Ü? It means the `best season` for vegetables. What is the best season for carrots?"
"Hmm...maybe winter?"
"That's right!"
"Do you like winter?"
"Yes, I do! I like snow!"

The teachers used vegeables to introduce the names of the different seasons.
IMG_2220.jpg "Watermelon is best in summer!"

Next, the teachers demonstrated a conversation to the students.
IMG_2204.jpg "Do you like autumn?"
"Yes, I do. I llike autumn."
"Why?"
"I like imonikai."

After practicing first with the person sitting next to them, the students stood up and interviewed many different classmates.
IMG_2191.jpg "Do you like summer?"
"No, I don't."
"Why?"
"I don't like hot weather."

Half-way through the activity the teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration.
IMG_2180.jpg Great reactions and gestures!

Next, everyone tried again keeping the good demonstration in mind.
IMG_2217.jpg Great reaction!

Finally we ended with another good demonstration from some students picked by the teachers.

5th Grade : Demonstration Class ¡Ê¸¦µæ¼ø¶È¡Ë

This week class 5-3 had a demonstration class. Many teachers came to watch their class and give advice to the teachers.

5th grade students have been studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 4 `I like apples.` This was their last lesson on this topic. The theme of the class was making sandwiches for their outdoor activities trip (Ìî³°³èÆ°¡Ënext week.
IMG_0080.jpg The class was also linked with Home Economics (²ÈÄí²Ê). The students thought about the different food groups.

First the teachers demonstrated the activity.
IMG_0090.jpg Let's make sandwiches for our friends but this time we will gather the ingredients too!

After the teachers demonstration, two students also did a demonstration.
IMG_0067.jpg This helps to check that the students understood what to do without the teachers explaining in Japanese.

In pairs, the students asked each other about what they like.
IMG_0074.jpg "Do you like lettuce?" "Yes, I do."

Then, they had to go to the `shops` to collect the ingredients.
IMG_0091.jpg "Lettuce, please." "Here you are."

Halfway through the activity the teachers picked some good students to give a demonstration. "Let's watch!"
IMG_0086.jpg Everyone thought about the good points of the demonstration and then continued the activity.

The shopkeeper and customers conversations were new English for the students.
IMG_0096.jpg The shopkeepers tried to call customers to their shops.

IMG_0092.jpg "Delicious!"

The students tried very hard during the class. It was a lot of fun for everyone.

5th Grade : Making sandwiches

5th grade students have been studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 4 `I like apples.` Since they studied the phrase `Do you like~?` as 4th grade students, we are focusing on expanding their vocabulary and reactions. In this week's class the students made each other sandwiches.

First the teachers demonstrated.
"Mr. Suda, how are you?"
DSC_9753.jpg "Oh, I'm so hungry!"
"Oh, no! I'll make you a sandwich!"

First you have to check each sandwich ingredient.
DSC_9754.jpg "This is tuna. Do you like tuna?"
"Yes, I do!"

Let's look at the final result.
DSC_9758.jpg Wow! Tuna and roast beef?! Mr. Suda likes strange sandwiches!

Then it was time for the students to try.

Next the teachers had two good students give a demonstration.
"Let's watch!"
"Do you like tomatoes?"
DSC_9767.jpg "No, I don't."
"Okay."
The students thought about the demonstration's good points. They had very good reactions! Let's change partners and try again while thinking about our reactions.

"Do you like cheese?"
DSC_9770.jpg "Yes, I do."
"Me, too!"

The students tried hard to give reactions.
DSC_9731.jpg It made the conversation flow smoothly.

"I don't like lettuce."

"Show me your sandwich, please."
DSC_9764.jpg "No vegetables? Oh, no! You don't like vegetables!"

"Look at my sandwich!"
