4th Grade : Let's make `Kamishibai`!

4th grade students had their third and fourth classes on the topic is `This is my day.` using the `Good Morning` picture book. In the first two classes we listened to the story and focused on learning how to talk about our daily routine. In the next two classses we had mixed English and art classes as the students made picture story shows (kamishibai) in groups.

After our usual greetings, we reviewed the daily routine phrases that we had studied in the previous classes.

Next, the students decided in their groups what pictures they would draw.
edited.jpg Each group had 4 or 5 members so the students each had to draw at least two pictures.

Each group decided on a character.
IMG_0448.jpg Some of the characters were famous cartoon characters and others were original characters that the students created.

The students could draw pictures that appeared in the story.
IMG_0449.jpg Some students also created their own original pictures for their character's daily routine such as snowboarding or playing baseball.

The students worked hard on their pictures in groups.
IMG_0456.jpg"Look! Our character looks like you!"

The students really enjoyed creating their own characters and drawing the pictures together.
DSC_3925.jpg Nice drawing!

Some of the students shared the work, too.One student was in charge of drawing the picture and the other student was in charge of coloring and adding details.
IMG_0464.jpg Nice teamwork!

Here are some examples of pictures that the students drew. They are still working on them so they are not finished yet.
IMG_0465.jpg "I wake up."

IMG_0452.jpg "I comb my hair."
The little green man has very little hair but he still combs it! Good job!

IMG_0460.jpg "I eat breakfast."
I wonder what Doraemon eats for breakfast.

IMG_0454.jpg"I finish my dinner."
Souta-kun eats ramen for dinner. It looks delicious!

The students all did their best to create good pictures.

It was a lot of fun to work together!
DSC_3927.jpg Good job!

2nd Grade : Let's perform skits!

2nd grade students recently had their tenth and last English class of the year. The topic was `The Big Turnip`. In the previous English class they studied about the story. In this class everyone will perform skits of the story.

We started class with our two usual greeting games: silent and normal. In the normal greeting game the students practiced using the phrase "Do you like ~?" and asked each other questions.

DSC_3931.jpg "Yes, I do!"

DSC_3754.jpg Hi five!

The teachers asked the students to nominate some of their classmates who had done a good job. The nominated students gave a good demonstration in front of everyone.

Next, we reviewed what we had studied in the previous class. We checked the English for each of `The Big Turnip` characters' names.
CIMG4214.jpg "Who is this?"

Next, we listened to Ms. Emily tell the story one more time so we could practice saying the English phrases together.
DSC_3761.jpg "Oh no!"
The turnip won't come out.

The wooden set Ms. Emily used to tell the story was very interesting. Depending on the way it was set up, sometimes even adding the mouse didn't make the turnip come out. In that case, everyone needed to cheer on the characters to help them pull out the turnip.
CIMG4233.jpg We studied words for cheering on others in Tomilish Time this year.
"You can do it! Don't give up! Do your best!"

Next, it was time for the main event. The students took turns to become the characters in the story and perform skits.
DSC_3938.jpg "Who wants to be the mouse?"
"Me! Me!"

The students all did their best to use the English from the story.
DSC_3775.jpg "Come here! Help me!"

DSC_3942.jpg" 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2!"

DSC_3952.jpg"Oh no!"

The students watching helped to cheer on the characters.
DSC_3776.jpg "you can do it!!"

Finally they pulled the turnip out!
edited.jpg"Yeay! Let's eat!"

All students got a chance to be characters in the story. It was a very fun class! We finished class by asking the students to reflect on their English classes this year. The students talked about which classes they had enjoyed the most and what they want to study next year.
edited3.jpg "I want to study more about animals."

Good job in English class this year! We'll study English more next year. Let's all do our best!

4th Grade : Good Morning!

4th grade students had their second class on the topic is `This is my day.` using the `Good Morning` picture book. In this first class we focused on the first half of the story. In this class we focused on the second half of the story.

As always we started class with a greeting game. The students have been practicing using the phrase "What is your favorite~?" that they studied in Tomilish Time.
IMG_0358.jpg Nice gestures!

IMG_0360.jpg Good eye contact!

IMG_0361.jpg Nice smile!

IMG_0362.jpg Good reaction!

After the greeting game we checked the goal for the class.
IMG_0370.jpg "Let's learn about Kazu's daily routine."

We used the digital version of the storybook to listen to the story again.
edited.jpg After listening to the story Ms. Emily asked many questions about the second half of the story.

"What's this?"
IMG_0367.jpg "It's a cat."
"That's right!"

Next, the students received small story cards and had to rearrange the cards into the correct order.
IMG_0368.jpg They put the cards in the same order as the story.

"Hmmm....what comes next?"
IMG_0369.jpg "Oh! It's this card! This one is next!"

After the students had put the cards in order, we checked the correct order together as a class.Ms. Emily helped us to pronounce each part of the `daily routine` in English. We also did gestures.
IMG_0375.jpg "I wash my face."

Some students were really good at doing the gestures.
IMG_0381.jpg "I comb my hair!"
Good job!

Finally, we listen to the chant. It's very fast!
IMG_0387.jpg Everyone did their best to at least do the gestures. Since it was the second time for the students to hear the chant some students also started singing along, too.

We all stood up and did the gestures together.
IMG_0392.jpg "I play with my friends."
Ms. Mayumi is going a great soccer gesture! Nice!
