5th Grade : Let's prepare our self-introduction speeches!

Recently 5th grade students have been studying We Can!1 Unit 1 `Hello, everyone`. They have been using the English they have studied so far as 3rd and 4th grade students to make self-introductions.

We started class with our greeting game as usual. Ms. Emily and a student volunteer showed a demonstration to everyone.

We always do a greeting game in order to review the English that the students have studied so far. It helps everyone to remember!

After watching the demonstration it was the students turn to try. They could use all the English they have studied so far.
IMG_0957.jpg "How are you?"
"I'm good!"

Many of the students used the English that we have been studying recently.
IMG_0968.jpg "What do you want for your birthday?"
"I want money!"

After the greeting game, Ms. Mayumi talked about how she has to do a self-introduction in English during her next business trip. Ms. Emily watched her self-introduction and gave advice to make eye contact and use a clear voice. The students also helped to give ideas about what to say.
"You could talk about what you like! You can say that you like natto!"
"Oh! Nice idea!"

Next, everyone checked the goal for the class.

The students got into pairs and introduced themselves to each other.
IMG_0971.jpg "I like swimming. I want a new pencil case."

We decided to do this before the students took any notes so that they wouldn't have any paper to look at. This means the students could make eye contact easily.
IMG_0954.jpg Great eye contact! Nice smiles!

The teachers picked some students to do a good demonstration to everyone.
IMG_0975.jpg "3, 2, 1, Action!"

The students who demonstrated had very clear voices. It was easy for everyone to understand.
IMG_0964.jpg Also they used all the English that they have studied so far. Good job!

After doing their demonstrations in pairs, the students tried writing about the things they like.
edited2.jpg The goal of elementary school English is not to write words but instead to copy them.

The back of the We Can!1 textbook has a big words list that the students used to copy.
IMG_0976.jpg "Look! This is how you write `blue`!"

If the word that the students wanted to copy didn't appear in the words list then they could ask any of the teachers how to spell the word. The teachers then wrote the word on the blackboard for the students to copy.
edited.jpg The students were all very interested in writing the words for the things they like.

Everyone tried hard to copy the words carefully.
IMG_0946.jpg The students are used to talking and listening a lot in English class but we don't do much writing so this was a very fun change for the students. Everyone really enjoyed it!

Lastly, the students who had finished writing first practiced doing their self-introductions. The teachers asked some of the students to give a good demonstration to the class.
IMG_0982.jpg You can see on the blackboard all the words that the students in the class wanted to copy. There are so many words!

Everyone will give their self-introductions while showing the words they wrote in the next class. Good luck everyone!

Tomilish Time : Grade Greeting Games

In this week's Tomilish Time with the whole school, the students got together in their grades to do greeting games.

Since it was the first time for 1st grade students to do a greeting game, some of the 6th grade students went to their classrooms to teach them what to do.
First, they taught them the `Hello Song`. They practiced doing all the gestures. The 6th grade students also said the words of the song slowly so the 1st grade students could repeat them.
DSC_4296.jpg Everyone tried their best to do the gestures and sing along.

After practicing the `Hello Song` a few times we did the greeting game. The 6th grade students gave a demonstration. They made eye contact, smiled and said "Hello!" while giving each other a high five. After watching the demonstration, it was time for everyone to try.

Everyone watched the teachers give a demonstration.

"Thank you! I like blue."

The 5th and 6th grade students gathered together in the gym. They know a lot of English so they could talk about many things in the greeting game.

"Yes, I do!"

2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students did their best in their grade levels.
IMG_0938.jpg "How are you?"

Half-way through the greeting game the teachers picked some students to give a good demonstration.

The other students announced what they thought about the demonstration.

Upper Grades Tomilish Time : Listening and Alphabet Activities

In this week's Upper Grades Tomilish Time both 5th and 6th grade students did activities from the textbook.

5th grade students did `Let's Listen 3` from We Can!1 Unit 1 `Hello, everyone.`
IMG_0157.jpg The students listened to the three characters talking about what they want.

First, the students listened once without taking notes.
IMG_0892.jpg They tried to catch the words that they understood.

Next, everyone listened two more times while taking notes so they could answer the questions.
IMG_0888.jpg After listening to the characters three times in total, everyone checked their answers together.

6th grade students did Activity 1 from Hi,friends!2 Lesson 1 "Do you have `a`?".
IMG_0894.jpg The students had to search the picture for letters of the alphabet that they recognised.

Everyone tried hard to find different words hidden in the picture.
IMG_0166.jpg "I see the word `GAME`!"

The students announced to the rest of the class what words they had found.
IMG_0901.jpg Some of the students wrote the words they found on the blackboard.

Other students spelled out the word they found for the teacher to write.
edited 2.jpg"Stop!"
"How do you spell `Stop`?"
"S-T-O-P."

Finally the students talked about what they had noticed. Some students noticed that sometimes the letter `a` looks different.
IMG_0907.jpg The teachers explained about the different ways to write the letter `a`.

Good job everyone!
