5th Grade : What shape do you like?

This week 5th grade students have started to studying Hi,friends!1 Lesson 5 `What do you like?`. They used this first class to interview their classmates about their favorite shape in order to add it to their class flags for sports day.

After our usual greetings we did a greeting game.
IMG_1121.jpg The homeroom teacher and one of the students did a demonstration for everyone to see. 5th grade students are focusing on using the English they know as well as talking to many different people.

After watching the demonstration it was time to greet.

Next, we did the chant. This time we are using the chant from Let's Try!1 Unit 5 `What do you like?`.

After the chant we listened to the teachers talking. They asked each other the question "What shape do you like?".

The students guessed that today's topic was `shapes`.

Next, we practiced the pronunciation of shapes in English with Ms. Emily.
IMG_1166.jpg Words that have similar Japanese pronunciations such as `diamond` were a little difficult.

Then, we practiced asking the teachers "What shape do you like?". This allows the students to practice asking the question because they can ask the question with many people. After asking the teachers, we then asked some of the students.
"What shape do you like?"
IMG_1171.jpg"I like crosses."

After practicing as a class we then practiced more in groups by playing a memory game. Everyone in the group would ask one person "What shape do you like?". They had to answer with the shape they like as well as remember what the previous people had said.
IMG_1173.jpg Asking questions with other people is a great confidence builder!

Next, we revealed the main goal for the class.
IMG_1125.jpg "We want to add some shapes to your class flags for sports day. Let's interview your classmates to find the most popular shape for this class."

Before starting the interview the teachers showed the students a demonstration.
IMG_1133.jpgMs. Emily also taught everyone how to tally numbers in Scotland.

"Let's interview!"
IMG_1128.jpg "What shape do you like?"
"I like stars."

Everyone worked very hard to wait until after both they and their partner had finished speaking in order to write down their results. That way they could make good eye contact.
IMG_1145.jpg Good job!

IMG_1182.jpg Nice smile!

Lastly, everyone tallied up their results.
IMG_1136.jpg The teachers asked everyone to raise their hands to find out the number one shape.

"What was your number one shape?"
"Stars?"
IMG_1138.jpg "Wow! Almost everyone found that stars was the most popular shape!"

We are all looking forward to seeing the finished flags at sports day!
