Before winter vacation 6th grade students started a new topic, `He is famous`. This is one of a number of topics that the students have been studying this year that are not part of Hi, friends!.

The first two classes in the topic followed a similar structure. As usual our classes started with a greeting game.
The students had to use any English that they know to speak to their friends.

Our 6th grade students are focusing on linking together English sentences and questions to make natural conversations.
"Nice blue shirt!"
"Thank you!"
"Do you like blue?"
"Yes, I do! What's your favorite color?"
"It's red."

Next, Ms.Emily and Ms. Keiko read a picture book.
6th grade students enjoy books and they are great for input.

The teachers gave some "Who is he/she?" quizzes about people. In the first class they used famous people and in the second class they used teachers in the school. "She is from Nagoya. She can jump. She can spin. She is very beautiful. She won a gold medal. Who is she?"
"Mao Asada?"
"Yes, that's right!"
In the first class we asked the students if they realised anything from the quiz.
"You used `He` when talking about boys and `She` when talking about girls!"
"Yes, that's right!"

"How about Ms. Emiko? When we talk about Ms. Emiko what word should we use?"
"He?"

"She?"
"She! She!"
"That's right!"

Next, we learnt a lot of different words to describe someone's personality. There were many words so it took two classes for us to learn them all. The teachers acted out the words and got the students to realise the meaning in Japanese. Then Ms. Emily taught everyone the English word.
Ms. Keiko is a good actor!

Good job 6th grade students!

Before winter vacation, we had been practicing the phrase "What's you favorite ~?" during Tomilish Time. The first question we practiced was "What's your favourite food?".
Ms. Emily's favorite food is steak!

In the next Tomilish Time we practiced "What's your favorite sport?". Everyone had to guess Mr. Kimura's favorite sport. Do you know what it is?
"My favorite sport is surfing!"

This was our first time to do Tomilish Time after winter vacation. First we talked about Ms. Emily's winter vacation.
She went to Scotland.

Next, Ms. Mayumi tried to guess Ms. Emily's favorite New Year food.
"Mochi?"
"No!"

"My favorite New Year food is steak pie!"
In Scotland, they eat steak pie at New Year. It looks delicious.

After the broadcast the students ask their teachers or each other the question, "What's your favorite~?".
"What's your favorite New Year food?"

"My favorite New Year food is kinako mochi."

Before winter vacation the 2nd grade students had their eighth English class of the year. The topic was "Do you like penguins?". It was the second time for the students to study about aquarium animals.

After our usual greeting game we reviewed the names of different animals that we had learnt in the previous class while doing gestures. Can you tell what animals these are?
"Sharks!"

"Seals!"

Next, we played the pointing game. It was a fun way to practice.
"Hands on your head! Turtles!"

"Turtles!"

After that we tired asking each other "Do you like~?" questions. First the teachers gave a demonstration.
"Do you like dolphins?"

After that Ms. Emily and the students asked each other questions.
"Do you like fish?"

"Do you like seals?"
"Yes, I do!"

"Do you like sharks?"
"No, I don't!"

After asking each other questions we finished the class with reading a book.
This is a Japanese book but Ms. Emily read it to us in English. It was fun to see all the different sea animals.

The students really enjoy reading a book at the end of class.

On Thursday December 15th parents came to the school to watch classes(授業参観). Some of the teachers decided to show English classes.

Minori students had their 5th English class of the year. It was their Christmas party!
They used the Christmas tree that they decorated during our open school event.

Students in classes 2-2 and 2-3 also had English classes.
"Do you like dolphins?"
"Yes, I do!" "No, I don't!"
"Let's ask 3 people!"

Class 5-2 have been studying Hi, friends!1 Lesson 8 `I study Japanese.` They can talk about subjects and days of the week.
"On Thursday, I study science."

Class 6-1 had a review class.
They used all of the English they have studied so far to interview their friends and then do a `Who am I?` Quiz.

"What do you want for Christmas?"
"Where do you want to go in winter vacation?"
"What sports do you like?"
Everyone tried to ask their friends many different questions.

"I like soccer. I want a Nintendo Switch. I want to go to Tokyo Disneyland. Who am I?"
