Tomilish Time : Let's meet other grades!

Tomilish Time last week was a little different from usual. Recently, the students have been doing Tomilish Time in their classrooms. However, this week each class joined up with a class from a different grade. We mixed 1st and 3rd grades, 2nd and 5th grades and also 4th and 6th grades.

First the students watched the teachers demonstrate greeting each other in English.

Then the students introduced themselves to students from the other grade.

1st Grade : Our Original Tomizawa Zoo!

Recently 1st grade students had their last English class for this year. We have been studying animals and numbers. We also visited Yagiyama Zoo and practiced animal names and counting in English there. Our final project was making our own original zoo.

Our class started with greetings and singing.

IMG_9824.jpg

We took turns singing the Hello Song.

IMG_9823.jpg

The students had great eye contact and smiled when they were singing!

We also did the chant 'How many balls?' from the Hi, friends!1 textbook.

IMG_9831.jpg

The students enjoy making gestures for the different animals in the chant. This is the dog gesture that they created.

Next, each student took out a picture they had drawn of their favorite animal.

IMG_9836.jpg

Show me your animals! What's this?

IMG_9837.jpg

It's a giraffe! Who drew a giraffe?

IMG_9838.jpg

Let's put our giraffes on the map! How many giraffes?

The students made a great map. Here are the maps for each class:

IMG_9125.jpg
Class 1-1's map has a lot of different animals!

Class 1-2's map has many cute red pandas!

Class 1-3's map has 6 giraffes!

Each class tried hard in English class this year. We are all excited about studying English again in 2nd Grade next year!

3rd Grade : Card Line-up!

Today we'll introduce another game 3rd grade students played when they were studying fruits and vegetables. It's called Card Line-up! (Card Narabe in Japanese).

First the students spread out the cards on the colored part of the paper. Then, they turn their backs to the cards. The teacher will say a list of fruits and vegetables. The students have to remember the order!

IMG_5851.jpg

Then the students can turn around and look at the cards. Go!

IMG_5840.jpg

The students work together to remember the order. What was next? Bananas? Grapes?

IMG_5845.jpg

The students line up the cards in order on the white part of the paper.

IMG_5850.jpg

Last, we check the order together. Did we get it right?
We recommend this game!

3rd Grade : Fruits and Vegetables Basket

3rd Grade English classes have already finished for this year but we'd like to tell you about some of our activities.

In September we studied fruits, vegetables and asking "What do you want?"
We played the game fruits (and vegetables) basket. Do you know it?
Everyone sits in a circle and gets 3 fruits or vegetables cards.

IMG_5934.jpg

When you get your card you have to make eye contact and say "Thank you!" with a big smile.

IMG_5926.jpg

One student doesn't have a seat. They stand at the front of the class and everyone asks them "What do you want?"

IMG_5932.jpg

They pick one fruit or vegetable and everyone with that card has to change seats. The student at the front tries to sit down too!

IMG_5923.jpg

Everyone wants to sit down!
If the student says "Fruits basket!", everyone has to change seats. It's a very fun game!
