6th Grade : Let's ask our friends about their weekend.

6th grade students have been studying Hi,friends!2 Lesson 6 `What time do you get up?`. They recently had their fourth class on this topic. Their next and final class on this topic will be with all the 6th grade students together.

We started class with a greeting game. The students thought of a famous person or character and pretended to be them. Their friends had to guess who they were by asking many questions.
"Guess who?!"
DSC_3359.jpg "Hmmm.... where are you from?"

"What food do you like?"
DSC_3362.jpg "What color do you like?"

Once they had asked enough questions they could guess.
"You are from Sendai and you like ice skating. Are you Hanyu Yuzuru?"
DSC_3403.jpg "That's right!!"

After the greeting game we did the chant.
chants.jpg Everyone does great gestures. Well done!
We also use the chant to signal when we want students to stop an activity and go back to their seat. After hearing it many times, it is easy to remember!

In the last lesson the students asked when their friends go to bed and get up on weekdays. In this lesson we asked about Saturdays. They could ask 4 questions: eat breakfast, take a bath, eat dinner and go to bed.

First the students guessed what time the 3 teachers did those things.
DSC_3363.jpg "Hmmm....maybe Ms. Keiko has dinner at 7pm on Saturdays."

Next we checked if everyone had guessed correctly or not. We could practice the questions by asking the teachers as a group.
"What time do you eat breakfast?"
DSC_3380.jpg "I eat breakfast at 10.30am."

After practicing it was time for everyone to talk to their friends. Everyone only asked each friend one question. They decided themselves if they wanted to ask everyone the same question or different questions.
DSC_3394.jpgGreat eye contact!

DSC_3369.jpg Clear voice!

DSC_3388.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_3390.jpg Some answers were surprising!

edited.jpg "See you!"

We checked the most common times as a class.
"Many people eat dinner at 6pm!"
"Only one person eats breakfast at 7.30am".
It was very interesting. Next time we are looking forward to finding out more about students in other classes. Good job everyone!

6th Grade : How long do you sleep?

On Friday some school principals from Fukushima came to watch English class. After watching the 4th grade class on the topic `This is my day.` they then watched the 6th grade students. Recently, 6th grade students have started studying a new topic. They are studying Hi,friends!2 Lesson 6 `What time do you get up?`. They had their third class on this topic.

First, we had our greeting game. The teachers gave a demonstration first and then the students asked each other. Just as in previous classes we focused again on the question "What did you do on Saturday and Sunday?".
DSC_3134.jpg "Let's talk to many people!"

DSC_3130.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_3132.jpg If someone thinks of something they want to say in English they can ask one of the teachers.

Next, Mr. Takeyuki talked to the students about the goal for the lesson. Recently many students at our school have the flu. He asked the students for ways that they can protect themselves from getting the flu. One of the students suggested going to bed early and getting up early.
DSC_3139.jpg Mr. Takeyuki told the students that the goal for the class was to find out what time their classmates go to bed and get up.

After checking the goal we did the chant using gestures.
DSC_3141.jpg "What time do you get up?"

Next, we practiced asking the questions "What time do you get up?" and "What time do you go to bed?". We practiced by having the whole class ask the question together to individual students.
DSC_3146.jpg "What time do you get up?"
"I get up at 6.30."

After practicing the students guessed what was the earliest and latest time that their classmates get up and go to bed.
DSC_3148.jpg "Hmmm....maybe the latest time to get up is 7? Otherwise they will be late for school!"

Then, after a demonstration by the teachers, it was time for all the students to ask their friends. We focused on asking the question "What time do you get up?" first.
DSC_3176.jpg Ms. Emily helped with the pronunciation.

DSC_3169.jpg Good eye contact!

After asking the question "What time do you get up?" a lot the teachers stopped the class and got some good students to give a demonstration.
DSC_3170.jpg "What time do you get up?"
"I get up at 6.15."
"6.15?"
"Yes."
Sometimes the times are difficult to hear so it's good to check. Well done!

Next, we focused on asking the question "What time do you go to bed?".
DSC_3154.jpg Nice eye contact!

DSC_3178.jpg Great smile!

Lastly, we all checked together who gets up and goes to bed the earliest and latest. Let's all ask them together!
DSC_3136.jpg "What time do you go to bed?"
"I go to bed at 8.30."
"It's early! Good job!"

Good job 6th grade students!

6th Grade : Thank you Ms. Saori!

For the past few weeks class 6-1 have had a student teacher, Ms. Saori, studying together with them. Ms. Saori is very good at English so she has been teaching English classes. She taught the whole unit for Hi,friends!2 Lesson 8 `What do you want to be?`.
DSC_2033.jpg When she taught the names for different jobs she focused a lot on the correct pronunciation. The correct tongue position for the `er` sound at the end of words like `baker` was difficult for the students but they tried hard.

After the teachers gave a demonstration using the phrase `What do you want to be?`, Ms. Saori asked some students to give a demonstration, too.
DSC_2034.jpg Good job!

During this class we played the chain game. Students took turns in a group to ask and answer "What do you want to be?".
DSC_2037.jpg Everyone worked well together.

DSC_2036.jpg Good eye contact!

edited2.jpg Nice gestures!

The chain game is a good activity to build confidence in groups before doing interview activities. It was a fun class!

Thank you Ms. Saori!
edited.jpg Good luck in the future!

6th Grade : Passport Control

6th grade students finished studying Hi,friends!2 Lesson 5 `Let's go to Italy`. In our last class on the topic the students did an activity where they pretended to be passengers and passport control workers.

First, we started with a greeting game as usual. The students could use any English that they know in order to continue their conversations as long as possible.
DSC_1855.jpg "What sport do you like?"
"I like basketball. Do you like basketball?"
"Yes, I do. Can you play basketball?"
"Yes, I can."

First, the teachers did a demonstration.
DSC_1683.jpgMs. Keiko has a good passport control hat! Ms. Emily used a `This is me` booklet for her passport. The students made their `This is me` booklets for an earlier topic.

After the demonstration it was the students' turn.
DSC_1863.jpg The passport control officers have many questions to ask!

The students took turns to be passengers and passport control officers. They checked the information in the booklet with what the passengers said.
DSC_1868.jpg "What is your name?"

"When is your birthday?"
DSC_1856.jpg "Where do you want to go?"

The students tried hard to remember the important points went making conversation in English.
DSC_1861.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_1860.jpg Great eye contact!

Good job everyone! We all had a lot of fun!

6th Grade : Country Bingo

6th grade students have been studying Hi,friends!2 Lesson 5 `Let's go to Italy`. We played bingo in order to practice the question "Where do you want to go?" and the country names in English.

First we need someone to decide the country.
"Volunteer, please!"
DSC_1834.jpg "Me! Me!"

All the students ask the volunteer "Where do you want to go?".
DSC_1837.jpg "I want to go to Brazil."

The students listen and shout out if they got bingo.
DSC_1838.jpg "BINGO! BINGO!"

The students used the small cards from the Hi,friends!2 textbook and turned them over when they heard the country name.
DSC_1835.jpg Almost bingo! So close!

It was a fun activity to play and everyone enjoyed it!

5th Grade : When is your birthday?

5th grade students have recently finished studying the topic `When is your birthday?`. It is actually from Hi,friends!2 Lesson 2 but this year 5th grade students sometimes have two English classes a week so we have been doing some extra topics, too.

Our first few classes on the topic we focused on learning the names of the months in English and also how to say dates. In our final classes on the topic we did two main activities: a listening activity and a conversation activity.

In the listening activity the students had to listen to the teachers tell them their birthdays. They had to draw a line between the teacher's name and their birthday.
DSC_1636.jpg Everyone had to listen very carefully! Everyone was very interested to learn when all the teachers' birthdays were.

The other main activity was a conversation activity. Everyone had to ask their friends when their birthdays were. First the teachers gave a demonstration.
DSC_1624.jpg "Hello! When is your birthday?"

Then it was time for the students to ask, too. Some times we asked the students to take notes on their friends birthdays. Other times we asked them to find people with the same birthday month as themselves.
DSC_1628.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_1626.jpg Good eye contact!

DSC_1614.jpg Great gestures!

It was a difficult topic for the 5th grade students but everyone tried very hard. Well done!

6th Grade : Go straight 2 blocks.

6th grade students had their last class on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 4 `Turn right`. In their previous class we had practiced being taxi drivers and customers. In this class we did the same activity while increasing the difficulty.

First, we started with our usual greeting game. It's a good time to practice the English we have already studied by asking questions such as "Do you like soccer?" or "What did you do on Sunday?".
DSC_1645.jpg Nice smile!

DSC_1638.jpg Good gestures!

After the greeting game, it was time for the chant.
DSC_1652.jpg Everyone is doing the `Go straight!` gesture. Good job!

Next, the teachers did a demonstration. The students had to watch and think about what was different from the previous class.
DSC_1659.jpg "Taxi!"

"Hospital, please."
"Where is the hospital?"
DSC_1662.jpg "Go straight 2 blocks."

This time instead of saying "Go straight!" many times we will only have to say it once by saying the number of city blocks to move forward. It's a very useful phrase!

After the demonstration it was time for the students to do the activity themselves.
DSC_1673.jpg "Where is the police station?"

DSC_1500.jpg "Go straight 3 blocks."

Finally we played the fortune path game. One person picked a place to start at the bottom of the paper. They follow the path up with everyone giving directions.
"Go straight. Turn right. Go upstairs."
DSC_1569.jpg The students created the fortunes themselves.

DSC_1560.jpg "Go straight! Turn left!"

DSC_1681.jpg Everyone did there best.

Well done 6th grade students!

6th Grade : Taxi Drivers

During their first two classes on Hi, friends!2 Lesson 4 `Turn Right.` the students had been practicing in the classroom. However, for the 3rd class we decided to use one of the big multi-purpose rooms to make a city for the students to use.

After our usual greeting game and chants, we used a small Anejiro doll to review giving directions.
DSC_1491.jpg "Turn left!"

Our main activity of the day was being taxi drivers and customers.
"Our taxi company is in trouble. We have no money. You need to have many customers! But, there are no signs on the buildings so the customers will have to give you directions."
"Where do you want to go?"
DSC_1575.jpg "I want to go to the post office."
"I'm sorry. I don't know."
"Okay. Go straight!"

DSC_1550.jpg The two girls in the back have good gestures!
"Here is the supermarket!"
"Thank you!"

This taxi has two customers! Wow!
DSC_1506.jpg

Everyone had to listen carefully!
DSC_1577.jpgNice smiles!

After some time the customers and taxi drivers changed roles.
DSC_1546.jpg Good job everyone!

It was a very fun activity!

6th Grade : Directions Information Gap

6th grade students had their second class on Hi,friends!2 Lesson 4 `Turn Right`. After the usual greeting game we asked the students about using the phrase "Turn right".
"Apart from asking for directions, when else would you use this phrase?"
"I know! I can show you!"
DSC_1405.jpg When you are carrying someone, they can tell you where to go. Nice idea!

After doing the chant for that lesson it was time for the main activity.
The main activity for the class was an information gap. After reviewing building names and phrases for giving directions the students got into pairs.
info gap.jpg The student with sheet A had to ask the student with sheet B for directions to many different buildings.

"Where is the restaurant?"
DSC_1407.jpg "Go straight and turn left. Here is the restaurant."

The students used bottle caps with eyes drawn on them to help them follow the directions.
edited.jpg "I see!"

The students tried to speak clearly and carefully.
DSC_1476.jpg If they didn't hear properly they repeated what they thought the person said, "Turn left?", or asked "One more time, please!".

The person giving directions tried to make eye contact when they were talking.
DSC_1406.jpg Good job!

Nice work everyone!

6th Grade : Turn right.

6th grade students have begun to study Hi,friends!2 Lesson 4 `Turn right`.

During our greeting game we used the `This is me.` books the students made during the last unit. First the teachers gave a demonstration.
DSC_1311.jpg "My nickname is Take-pon. I'm from Yamagata. I like soccer. I can't cook."

The students worked hard to make eye contact during this activity.
DSC_1313.jpg When you are holding a piece of paper it is easy to look at that while you are talking. The students did their best to only glance at the paper to remind themselves what to talk about.

DSC_1317.jpg Great eye contact!

The teachers picked two students to give a good demonstration.
DSC_1321.jpg They gave great reactions when the other person was talking. "Nice!" "Me, too!" "That's great!"
Reactions are important for making conversations.

Next, we had `Teacher Talk`. Do you know this man with curly hair and a hat?
DSC_1326.jpg Actually it's Mr. Takeyuki pretending to be someone else! Maybe he was embarrassed but he tried very hard for the students.
"Where is the post office?"

Ms. Keiko gave him directions.
DSC_1329.jpgHe used Anejiro on the map to check the directions.

DSC_1331.jpg "Here is the post office."

We practiced the English names for buildings and tried to notice what was different about the English and Japanese.
DSC_1333.jpg "Fire station, police station and station all have the word `station`! It's interesting!"

After doing the chants we also played a game. The students closed their eyes and the teachers gave directions. "Turn right! Go straight!"
When they opened their eyes they should all be facing in the same direction!
DSC_1309.jpg Some of the students gave directions, too.

Good job everyone! The students have been using what they studied, already. When Ms. Emily went to eat lunch with class 6-1 they used English to direct her to the table where she could eat.
"Go straight. Turn left. Go straight. Stop!"
Well done!
