The Building’s History

Former barracks of the 4th infantry regiment

Architectural style:

This building is the oldest Western-style wooden building in Miyagi Prefecture.  It is two stories tall, with hipped roof tiling and plaster-coated walls, and is decorated with cornerstones. Other features of the building are its glass sash windows and Western-style columns.

Use of the building:

From the building’s completion in September 1874, it was used by the Japanese army until 1945.  After World War II, the United States Armed Forces used the building until 1956.  It was then used as a police academy for the Japanese Tohoku district police until 1975.

Restoration of the building and Tsutsujigaoka Park:

Until 1977, the barracks comprised several buildings around the central training ground.  All these buildings, except for one, were demolished when the site was designated as a public park.  The remaining building was restored to its original state, as it would have appeared in 1904.  It remains that way to this day, and currently houses the Sendai City Museum of History and Folklore.
